you know what kills me about internet communication? the timing. there’s no clear sense of when it’s time to speak or time to listen the way there is in real life conversations in which you’re aware of the direct circumstances and situation (and usually the mood) of your audience so you can respond and adjust accordingly. real conversations need both words and silence, an equal give and take that takes the other person’s whole self (and their responses and reactions) into account. and i get that the way online communication, especially tumblr, works is as an ongoing conversation you can tune in and out of as you choose and that it’s on all of us to engage only when we feel up to it and leave when we don’t- 

but it’s still hard to shake the feeling that you’re talking too much and listening too little and that you’re doing it without the proper awareness of how the person on the other end is actually doing as your posts meet their consciousness and they are forced to think about whatever you’re thinking about.

am i wildly overthinking this? YES. but it still bothers me.
