What is your opinion on Azula from ATLA?
Oh, anon, my opinion is that Azula is one of the most intriguing villain/badass character I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.
Azula is absolutely FASCINATING. She was a pure villain with almost no redeemable qualities, and yet she was rounded. She was intelligent, sassy, confident. She made me laugh, gasp, and drove my emotions all over. And as a writer, I loved as more of her character was shown and how complex she became. Plus, there’s this gem: “I have to find the Avatar to regain my honor. It’s okay. You can laugh. It’s funny.” (My husband and I still quote this to each other randomly. We also do the “I don’t hate you.” “I don’t hate you too.” which is way lame, but there you go.)
I loved every episode with her. She was so elegantly ruthless and cunning and clever and vicious and manipulative. But then you had episodes like “The Beach” and even though it was funny, it also showed her as a girl. A young girl. She was a kid who still wanted to flirt with boys (even if she was terrible at it “That’s a sharp outfit Chan”) and had trouble socializing and was awkward. She experienced jealousy, probably for the first time, about something as simple as boys liking Ty Lee more than her.
When Ty Lee and Mei switch sides, it devastates her in a way I didn’t see coming. It crippled her that her best friends ultimately chose to side with the Avatar. That’s where she starts breaking down and by the time she fights Zuko at the end she’s a mess. Her arch and story and overall character was one of the more complex on the show and it was her character that made me start to see Avatar as more than just a kids show. It Azula that took Avatar to a whole new level for me. (Yes, that show had many powerful, complex things happening, but Azula, to me, is when I first realized it.)
I don’t really do her justice here, I’m really just rambling about how much I love her and other people have explained her so much better, but the bottom line is that Azula is one of my favorite characters ever. I have so much love for ATLA. I could gush and flail over nearly every part of that show. (Except maybe most of season one…)
