Rei is SO CLOSE to smashing through Minako’s Princess disguise. I wonder, when she gets to the truth, how is she going to react? What will change? Will anything, functionally? I’M SO CURIOUS TO KNOW
To the plan itself though. I was going to make a joke about how it was hilariously easy for Rei to start connecting dots as soon as she knew Minako was the Princess, information the Dark Kingdom has had this whole time and taken no further. The more I think on it, though, I don’t think that’s a plot hole or oversight, I think it’s character work.
Minako and Rei trying to one-up each other over the dog was objectively hilarious, particularly because of how unnecessary and over the top it was. It was also fantastically one-sided, really, with Minako acting and Rei REacting, to the degree that I think Rei gets a little bit lost in Minako’s antics. What all that does, though, is give Rei an unnoticed front row seat to Minako at her purest, to how she thinks. In a short span of time, Minako’s got Rei so down that she knows exactly where in the entire city to put her fucking lost dog poster and WHEN to do it so Rei will see it happening, upping their puppy game while ALSO teaching her a critical lesson in sussing out the enemy’s true motives. But it’s not one-sided at all.
All that was about Rei, she’s the main focus. That’s very likely what Minako thinks, too, and so it’s entirely possible she has no idea how much she’s really shown Rei in all this ridiculousness. Like how calculated she is, how observant, how strategic. How SMART. Minako may have figured out Rei in those two days, but Rei ALSO figured out Minako, and so she knows -- she KNOWS -- there’s no fucking way Minako is this stupid. The Dark Kingdom might see the little breadcrumbs left by International Pop Idol Aino Minako and thank their luck that their target has no idea how easy she’s making it to hunt her down, but Rei knows better and it makes no sense and BY GOD Minako is going to explain herself.
