The mental strategies that are addressed in an athletes mental state are confidence, self-talk and motivation. A small Huffingtonpost article where Michael Duncan,
Tolbert 7 Ph.D.,the associate head of the department of applied sciences and health at Coventry University in the U.K. used the expressions “butterflies in the tummy”, a common phrase for expression of anxieties and nervousness. When anxiety enters the mind, it can be a key figure in disrupting an athlete’s focus and getting the win. The split seconds that are needed to push onward maybe interrupted. With anxiety, right at the center of the whole thing, a sports psychologist will help an athlete overcome crushing anxieties.
Also with anxiety, constantly thinking rather than focusing affects the performance I have experienced the anxieties during track meets in the past. I ran track for 9 years and I would frequently face this wall. But I would eventually learn to over come feeling. Nonetheless, it feels miserable. With a little time, one will get used to the feeling and begin to perform. However, as the level of competition becomes much more fierce, the levels of stress and anxiety are likely to grow as well. Being capable of working through ones stress, which we all are capable of doing, even if help is needed, can open up many doors in not just an athlete’s world, but anyone’s as well. Overcoming fears and anxieties can be a great and positive characteristic to develop at younger ages. Sports Psychologist Amanda J. Visek, Ph.D was quoted by Dr. Andrew Evans and Matthew Slater in their article Getting Down With Kids: suggested that” sports psychology consultants should aim to develop life skills when working in youth sports because sports serve as a medium for youth athletes to learn and refine valuable transferable skills” (Evans & Slater, 62). In fact, allowing the youth groups to engage in sports, can teach them teamwork, sportsmanship, build up confidence and develop a vision of their potential.

In the 1968 Olympics, held in Mexico City, Dick Fosbury a high jumper that introduced the eponymously coined the Fosbury Flop, revolutionized the event notable arch-jump over the bar landing on his back was quoted saying that “when you reach that elite level, 90% is mental and 10% is physical. You are competing against yourself. Not against the other athlete.” Having an understanding of the mental components within athletic performance is a key lesson that the professionals have learned leading some to enlist a sports psychologist for the team. Unfortunately, athletes will face tiresome lows, but will maintain a strong mind. And Dr. John Murray, PhD is a well-respected confidants, who treats NFL players, professional golfers and professional tennis players confirms the argument , that it is critically important for athletes to train their minds properly for stressful competitions as well as personally to increase success in the game (McNulty, 2003, Sports Illustrated).
