Is Mumbo based on any specific type of fish? Is the glow a thing specific to the royal family?

Mumbo isn't based off of any specific fish, no. I honestly wanted free range for the design of his fins, so I didn't look at any references. They're designed from inspirations I've had in the past and my own personal aethestic. Not only that, but I also try to relay personality and emotion through the design of his fins. (not sure how successful I am with that one.)

Yes, only the royal family has the glow. It's actually a significant detail to the (chopped-together) "lore" of the mers in this universe. Long story short, A mer was worshipped for glowing, they became the ruler, and the trait was passed down to their offspring, thus creating the royal family.
