19. A kiss underwater
STOMMY
19. a kiss underwater + stommy - anything for my becca!!!
It starts as a challenge to see who can stay underwater longer; it's a game they've played before, too many times to be interesting, but still. Steve almost always wins, until Tommy starts making himself hyperventilate before going under, emerging the dizzy winner. Tommy tries to remember whose idea it was. For one of them to release all their breath, settling at the bottom of the Harrington pool, the other swimming above before they got the signal (not an actual signal, just the sense of one—it's all they needed, really) to swim down, pass the air from one to the other. It was a different kind of exertion, getting lightheaded after three, four passes. No time to truly catch his breath above water before he was going back down, the sun bouncing off the water making everything sparkly, almost painful. It must've been Steve's idea, Tommy lands on. He's at the bottom of the pool and through squinting eyes, he can see the blurry shape of Steve's form paddling above. It has Steve written all over it. His ears are feeling plugged, uncomfortable, and relief blooms when Steve starts swimming toward him. He reaches out, pulling Steve down. Their knees bumping together because it's the only way to feel grounded when they're floating. Steve's mouth on his, but he doesn't breathe out like he does. Tommy pauses, but Steve just kisses him. Hands on either side of his face, knee settling against his thigh. Tommy holds his waist, pushing up. Steve doesn't stay at the bottom of the pool, he follows him up, hand clinging to his shoulder. Separates after a moment. "What was that?" Tommy asks when they emerge. He struggles to tread, still catching his breath. Steve shrugs. "Thought I'd try something different. Did it work?" Tommy tries to find an answer. His nose dips back under, eyes trained on Steve's smile. He doesn't know how to say it did, in a way. "Okay. My turn," Steve says, when Tommy doesn't respond. He takes a deep breath and sinks under. Tommy waits to follow, looks for it. The signal.
