So back when Red found out the whole deal about Gene's existence (the whole *two heroes of psychic legendaries* "Tell me everything" moment) was Mewtwo...mad? At Celebi and Dialga?

Like Gene and Mewtwo have somewhat similar 'created life forms without any concern for the long term health and happiness of the created life forms' backstories. Celebi's a lot better now but like, wouldn't mewtwo have been all 'Red. I don't care how competent he is Red this is a 3 year old. We're protecting him. He's one of the few humans I want to protect.'

And then goes and gives Celebi and Dialga a piece of his mind. I would love to be a cutiefly on the wall of that conversation. XD

to be fair gene's job is to help people and he had celebi's help (not very helpful but it was there at least 😂) while mewtwo was made for Nefarious Reasons (I know they say in the kanto games that mew made mewtwo but I don't buy that), but celebi's casual attitude at the start probably ruffled a few feathers!

Re: pokemon food web and bug pollinators and the like.

My personal headcanon is that Pokemon is a post-apocalyptic utopia built on Earth. Pokemon are a colonizing alien species that need intelligent life to facilitate new divergences in biology. Think like Octavia E Butler's 'Xenogenesis' series. Pokemon behave a lot more like a single species than is otherwise reasonable.

Arceus (and Dialga/Palkia/Giratina) and the Unown and Mew are all the original 'aliens'. Mew psychically interprets the partner species' thoughts and helps 'make' the original and new species of pokemon based off their imaginings. Dialga/palkia/giratina facilitate interstellar travel, and Arceus and the unown provide like, administrative guidance.

Humans probably bombed the world nearly to oblivion before the pokemon came. Pokemon like Kyogre/Groudon/Rayquaza were made to re-terraform the earth.

Bugs? Humans always make them bigger in their imaginations. Only a few people really understand their importance in pollination, most people think of them like carnivores and herbivores, just scaled down. But plants? Don't they like, pollinate themselves? So isn't that the niche plant pokemon fill? They make diverse pollens and spores within themselves and distribute them in their environment.

So humans have concepts for cats, dogs, horses, spiders. But everything's probably been outcompeted by far more effective pokemon tailor-made to make and then keep the world habitable for humans. So humans can keep partnering with pokemon and facilitating their evolutions, changes, dreaming up new designs (living keychains, sentient gears, giant snowflakes, levitating rocks with fists, ice cream cones, sentient sludge puddles - all uniquely human phyche concepts, where would such a thing even develop in the natural world?)

Its why the Fairy Type can suddenly start existing. Why Dragon and Steel and Rock and Fairy and such are Types, lacking any true real world living comparison. Somewhere out there is a whole other planet of an inhuman partner species with entirely different pokemon (their own arceus, dialga, palkia, giratina, mew, and unown, everything else is different), and a Type chart that would be incredibly confusing to us.

It doesn't necessarily have to be post-apocalyptic, they could have just been slowly replacing animals in the world for generations. Ash could be living through one of the largest extinction events ever, where there was lobsters at a buffet in season one, and hamburgers, and eventually they're all gone, but I kinda ignore the first dex/season discrepancies as the franchise hadn't chosen its direction at that point. So, for a long time, there were no animals, only pokemon. People hunted pokemon for a while (Farfetch'd, that sword guy legend in Kalos) but they have since acknowledged their general sapient-level intelligence and society looks down on that, mostly. And the pokemon have done such a job of making the world livable, with berries that literally heal, water so pure and clear its practically restorative, a wide variety of plant proteins and the like, that a 10 year old can survive in the wilds on mostly forage super easily.

The pokemon world is our world (mostly the same topology, Kalos is where France is, etc, some cultural mores have carried into the future) and yet its gone through some drastic changes (Madrid, Spain, is straight up a crater in Paldea). Pokemon LOVE partnering with people, mostly, because they literally can get stronger by bonding to their trainers, power of friendship and all that. And the mews keep making shit like intelligent keychains, and setting them free into the world. Bug pokemon don't pollinate, they're like horror movie imaginatuons of what bugs were, plant pokemon keep things going, Dragons and Fairies are real now but provided their shape isn't that different they can all make eggs together.

Pokemon invaded from space. They just like us and need us and take care of us and don't really rule over us so we're like, mostly okay with it. XD

OH this is like a dissertation, you could totally make a theory video out of this!! or become a pokemon professor tbh, maybe one that works in secret to preserve records of the past? 😳😳😳

hmmm that could even tie into the original “there was a war in kanto” theory based on lt. surge until they changed his dialogue later, if there was some sort of resistance -- but clearly dialga actually has some control over time (space travel doesn’t make sense otherwise) so they could have altered the timeline to undo even that??

I guess in that case UBs are like, rival aliens or something?? hmm 🤔🤔🤔

I completely understand where people are coming from, with Volo deliberately opening the rift to make the narrative happen.

But, my opinions match yours a little more. Volo is Archie, Maxie, or Cyrus, after the point where their big plan to access their target pokemon failed, but unlike the others, there was no hero there at the moment of failure to save the day. When the Red Chain breaks for Cyrus, when Archie and Maxie's orbs enrage Kyogre and Groudon instead of controlling them, the protagonists of the games stumbled into the plot to stop disaster from happening.

Volo didn't have a Team, nobody stumbled upon his plot before he had implemented it thanks to the incompetence of his underlings, Volo did it all with himself snd Giratina. This wasn't his intended goal...this is what happened when he failed. But he's still going for his goal. The protagonist offers a solution to his fuck up.

I feel he's more like Solas from Dragon Age than a more competent, if crazy, antagonist like Getsis, who gets exactly what he aims to achieve but still fails. Volo fucked up. This wasn't what he was aiming for.

oooohhh, this is a fun take -- also ties into how things are implied to go badly in worlds with no protags in the Rainbow Rocket episode (half the villains are like "oh I was about to die when I was brought here instead") but for Volo he's just like "hey I want to meet arceus!! oh there's a rift now? okay lol it is what it is"

I think if you ever consider another kind of non-nuzlocke run for Gene, when he gets back from the past he goes to galar on a legit vacation this time, and also to remind himself that he can in fact cook, hisuian adventures aside. I don't plan to replay SWSH with gene but I'm sure that Paldea will have some form of Pokemona amie/curry/poffins to carry on the tradition!! oh, but I like shiny hunting so much........ 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

So you got a little tired of Nuzlockes, so Gene git his deal to remove the Nuzlocke curse. I thought it was a super interesting way of viewing nuzlockes, as a legendary's curse. What an intriguing interpretation!

The original premise of nuzlockes also kinda depressed me, until I came up with a more benevolent headcanon. I'll share it with you in case you ever want to take sweet, caring Gene through one again.

My headcanon for Nuzlockes now is that the League has stated that pokemon who faint in battle can't be used in combat again because its like, taking a serious brain injury in football, they played the violent sport and now they should retire. And to avoid over-poaching pokemon you can only catch the ones that approach you first in a route, and only one per area, though for diversity of teams you are permitted to bypass pokemon from lines you've already captured.

Just a bunch of ecologically sensitive, conservation, sporting animal welfare legislation. Gym Leaders and E4 get to use the same mons after fainting because they have like, on staff nurses who clear them for battle, but you gotta earn those stripes by earning the badges and challenging the league.

Anyways now instead of "OMG my pokemon died" in my run records, its "I hope Durian likes a retirement of helping my mom in the garden because his battling days are over, sad because I love love LOVE Sandslash so much, really wanted to take him to the Elite 4."

( I think if I did another challenge with him it wouldn’t be called a Nuzlocke either, to spare him any potential flashbacks ksdfhsdjkfh 🥺 the pokedex challenge is too tough though, since oftentimes the dex really opens up after the first few areas 😳)

I do tend to keep track of how many times a Pokemon has fainted in recent runs out of habit (it was only like uhhhh maaaaybe once or twice in swsh?? and a lot more in pla skjdfsjd) but that’s more for my own “oh man this would have been so heartbreaking as a nuzlocke” thoughts than anything else 😂

Darkrai Dad likes to handle the weird nightmares. But sometimes Silent runs into strange things he doesn't understand, but when he's in a Dream World Scenario the scenario sort of provides him with the solution even if he doesn't understand what's really going on. Its like when you have an epic story dream and you in the dream just magically knows how to defuse a nuclear bomb or whatever is needed to keep the 'plot' going. Silent usually intuitively knows how to solve a nightmare scenario, he just has to do it, like trying to ride a bike after decades of not doing it.

Silent understands human speech but he can't speak it. He speaks Dreamspeech, which is sort of a subconscious level of communication. Have you ever been in a dream and had a conversation but when you wake up you realize that the other person wasn't actually talking? Or read a book but realized in the morning there weren't actually any words on the pages, just scribbles? The dream didn't want to take the time to simulate actual words and the complexities of language - too much work! - so it just gave you the knowledge of what the other person was saying or what was in the book. That's how Silent communicates; I actually headcanon its similar to how Pokemon speak to each other after a fashion. So most people who meet Silent outside the Dream World think he's mute, but people like N and Gene who can understand all pokemon can probably 'hear' Silent as well and read his 'chicken-scratch' journals. I dunno if Fennel would understand him in that case so when he goes to Unova Fennel might be trying to explain some Dream World phenomena she's studying and Silent realizes like, she's picking up on places where he's done his job. But when he does his job well people don't remember the nightmare, and if they remember him at all they usually replace him with a real life person that they think of as their hero. So he might not be able to tell Fennel anything about his 'homeland.'

ooooooh, Dreamspeech is a really cool concept!! (also like dreaming about writing a comic and drawing every single bit of the line art but then realizing later that you didn't actually write the dialogue -- it was just sort of there mentally)

dang though, he doesn't even get recognition smh, that's so sad, maybe at least N would think he's cool 😔😔😔😔😔
