can someone help me untangle the "alison bechel is a TERF" discourse? because i just read through one of her comics collections recently and found it VEHEMENTLY pro-trans. and the one comic that everyone brings up comes off to me as the kind of "any attempt to exclude trans women from the bathroom will exclude nonconforming cis women" transactivism 101 take we've been trying to get normies to accept for years now. going to Mitchfest seems damning, but the trans child in "dykes to watch out for" literally made me cry because of how much i connected to her on a personal level. a major plot in the book is bechdel's self insert getting over transphobia. i dont know what's going on here.

Bechdel's whole POV is "i used to think you trannies were disgusting intruders but now i think that yall just uphold gender stereotypes and should be allowed tentatively as Conditional Members Of Women, and also im Really Happy That I Wasn't Transed, and That My Disgusting Cross-Dresser Father Is Not In My Life"

editors note on the editors note in the next post below: it was pointed out to me that it is pretty cruel to imply that she intentionally or unintentionally triggered her father's possible suicide, which i agree with, and should not have been done.

i should be clear that i don't think she wanted that or is happy about it.

from what ive read about the whole situation, and what ive read from her about it, i personally feel she falls into the same assumptive processes she has about trans women about her father's cross-dressing and latent homosexuality, and i reacted from that thought process.

Could u picture Gideon getting a service dog (for ptsd or another reason) n then it accidentally therapising harrow too? I feel like Harrow would benefit from a service animal but it seems unnatural for her to do the first step or think of it. What do u think? Or would it be random animal distribution system and oops Harrows a cat father now (one of those dads who 'never wanted/hates' the cat but is obsessed)

in quinns words: "gideon will never get a service dog bc that would require her to admit she has a problem And be a good dog owner, both of which she will not do" its more likely that nonas service dogs will end up alerting harrow from time to time since theyd have similar medical conditions + harrow is constantly under a state of stress. your fucking heart rate babe

gideons actually the guy who never wanted a dog - she wanted marrow out of there but noone can resist the charms of a stupid little puppy. later on she gets a soft spot for another dog, a badly behaved pitbull named bechdel (becky for short). shes a mid dog owner btw. she is not training that thing she is giving them her leftovers and leaving them outside to catch birds

reading fun home rn and wow is it a piece of penna dutch heritage fiction. Like obviously there's Literally Everything Else Important about it but it makes me feel so seen reading it, the way Bechdel writes her grandmother's accent, the drawings of the houses and the landscape, like even the names that their father calls in his class are so hyperlocal and the sober, emotionless way that the characters seem to be moving so far especially around death is so typical of our culture

When you read literature about being butch and it throws such accurate statements like this at you. I got so much butch joy reading this.
