I carry a small tape measure on my keychain because several months ago some lady in the grocery store asked me if I had a tape measure on me. I don't work there, she just apparently thought I looked like someone who would have a tape measure on a trip to the grocery store and I was so flattered by this assumption that I went out and bought a keychain tape measure. I have had reason to use it almost every single day since so I guess what I am saying is Thank you, Grocery Store Lady Who Needed To Know How Wide a Baking Tray Was, you were so right and it has improved my life.

earlier this week my carabiner arrived, so I took this picture and sent it to my friends, who are remarking that, with nary a pride flag in sight, this is still an enormously sapphic image. they are right.

I am happy that I grew up as a kid with another tomboy (now also grown into a butch lesbian) three years above me in school, with whom I also had extracurriculars. I am biased bc I had such a persistent crush on her but in our extracurricular she was really one if the cool kids but also at school I saw that she was popular and really well liked. Looking back I think she's an important reason why I grew up with a lot less neurosis around being a tomboy/butch than what I otherwise could. Like yes I was a loner nerd at school with no friends and I was generally excluded from social gatherings by classmates, and being a tomboy did make me feel alienated from the other girls, but she was well liked, so I never had to think that being a tomboy then butch in and of itself would be a barrier between myself and connecting with other people. And luckily as I've grown up I've found this to be true.

Seeing and knowing older butches is so important, and I really wish I had (then and also now) a butch adult around me, but having that three years older tomboy was also enough to leave such a huge positive impact on me and my developement.

being back on tumblr and digging through my old posts has turned me into a nostalgia monster, lmao.

stumbled across a cover i did of "ring of keys" from fun home nine years ago (i saw fun home 18 times on broadway and wouldn't realize i was gay till two years after that (ha ha ha)). wild to look back on my relationship to this song as the person i was then — someone with so much beautiful self-discovery ahead of her — from the vantage point of the person i am now.

felt only right to play it again as the me of 2024 :)

there was this 12 year old kid in my cabin at camp, and she had a twin sister. her and her sister were both very alike and very different. we were getting ready for the first camp dance and i was going to wear a tie, her sister was in a dress and she had on pants and a button up white shirt. i made a joke about us and another kid matching with our 3 button downs and her sister said ‘yeah [name] really hates dresses’ to which the kid responded ‘they just feel wrong i hate them.’ i agreed and so did the other kid.

i was finishing getting ready and i watched her stare at my tie while i was putting it on, just fully, big eyes, staring at this tie. so i asked if she’d like me to put it on her for a minute because why not? it’s camp, new experiences are important and it’s good to try things you haven’t before. my job is to help with that.

she nodded. i tied it and she looked in the mirror before breaking out into the largest smile i’d ever seen from this kid (and she smiled a lot). she said, ‘it feels so good! it just feels right.’ and so i smiled and said ‘i know, it’s a good feeling.’

she ended up wearing that tie all night and sent her mom a letter the next day asking to get some when she went back home.

this made me so happy i really wanted to share it
