i am having many thoughts about “riches and wonders” this evening and so i will be sharing them here. i know JD’s personal interpretation of the couple in the song is that they are happy together for the time being, but that the “i wanna go home, but i am home” line is largely an admission that they do NOT feel at home together (season 1 episode 8 of IOLTTMG).
HOWEVER, i have decided i am going to ignore this interpretation because of the surrounding lyrics. i just personally think the second verse really does me in. this is a couple that has baggage. they have issues; maybe those issues rub up against each other sometimes, but the lines “you find shelter somewhere in me, i find great comfort in you” and then later “i keep you safe from harm, and you hold me in your arms” is really giving the song a “despite everything, we still have each other” energy.
for me personally, that changes the meaning of “i wanna go home, but i am home” to a brief sense of feeling lost, only to realize that their relationship is home. riches and wonders is a beautiful love story between broken people, and i like to think they are making it work.
listening to sad traditional folk music and thinking about my bestie leaving again
