I decided I was going to be tough and do the other hive even though I was hot and exhausted. Probably not the best choice, because my brain was barely functional, but whatever.
Did not see a new queen, but found one frame with eggs! Means a queen is there, or at least within the last 3 days. Bottom hive was so packed with bees that I could barely do anything without squishing one, even though I move super slow and careful. (They were mostly ignoring the top box instead of moving up.)
So in my compromised decision-making state, I thought, "There's so many they're going to swarm! I'll split them now!" I pulled out two honey frames and the frame of eggs, and put in a nuc box with two empty frames.
The problem with this is I don't know if there were any other eggs left in the big hive, and: a) I could have squished the queen in the crowd, or b) I could have accidentally moved her to the nuc. Possibly leaving the big hive with no queen or way to make one.
Oh, well. It might work. If not, I'll deal with it. (I've got two other hives that can make eggs for queens.) Need to check them in a week and see what they are up to.
