‘A. Manager, Beef Trust', runs for the Steamer 'Just Sailing' for Europe. He carries a suitcase of evidence, a book of facts and figures, and his hat is also full of evidence.

The caption reads 'Of course this gentleman can know nothing damaging about the beef trust'.

The grand jury inquiry into the Beef Trust was almost prepared to begin.

Not a Dead Letter

March 16, 1904

The Sherman Anti-Trust Law leaps out of its coffin at the funeral, punching out the Railroad Trust and sending the other trusts running.

The caption reads "An unexpected interruption to the funeral."

The Sherman Anti-Trust law had been widely ignored and unenforced, until the Supreme Court ruled against the merger of the Northwest Railroads.

Modern Boy Blue

March 23, 1904

President Roosevelt, Anti-Trust club in hand, hops a fence to get to the Beef Trust, which is eating corn such as Rights of the Public and Rights of Stock Raisers.

The caption reads "Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn. The sheep's in the meadow, the cow's in the corn- Where's little boy Blue, who tends the sheep? You can bet your life he's not asleep! Will he tackle the brute we all have cussed? We think it likely the TRUST - he'll BUST."

Roosevelt was working towards anti-trust legislation targeting the Beef Trust.

The Modern Mother Goose

July 28, 1902

Swift Company and Armour Company conspire to strap wings ('Combine') on the Beef Trust cow, so that he can jump over the moon ('High Prices'). 

The caption reads “Hey diddle, diddle, the cat and the fiddle, The Beef Trust will make the cow soar; The little dog weeps to view such sport, For he can't get a bone any more.”

There were rumors that the Swift and Armour companies would merge. They had already joined together to buy the largest stockyard in the country. This would eventually result in an antitrust suit against the Swift Company.

Modern Mother Goose

May 31st, 1902

Chicago (Mrs. Hubbard) has no meat in her cupboard; her dog, Consumer, is disappointed. New York, similarly, has no coal for his stove. 

The caption is a nursery rhyme “Old Mother Hubbard She went to the Cupboard To get her Poor Dog a Bone. But a Strike was on there, And the Cupboard was Bare, And so the Poor Doggie got None.”

“Mynheer Knickerbocker He went to the Locker To get his poor Cook-Stove some Coal. But he started in fright; There was no anthracite, And all he could see was a hole.”

The actions of the beef trust had caused the price of meat to rise, while a strike had harmed the coal industry.

Vaccinating the Trusts

April 24th, 1902

Doctor Roosevelt applies the needle of Government Control to one of the Trust Octopus's many arms, which include the Steel Trust, the Asphalt Trust, the Food Trust, the Railroad Trust, the Navigation Trust, and the Beef Trust.

The caption reads “Give the Doctor Time; His Patient Has a Lot of Arms that Need Attention.”

The Attorney General had just begun action to control the Beef Trust, which had secretly colluded to restrain trade, and worked with the Railroad Trust to get preferred rates.
