Sky Islands AU

Yes the artist’s name is about:blank it’s not just a missing file.  also yes, this is an earthworm jim OST remix but i know next to nothing about that game so I just chose something the song made me think of.

The idea of a world that’s made up of floating islands scattered throughout an endless sky has always fascinated me.  It’s impossible, of course.  It simply wouldn’t stay in place, and the closest thing you could get to it would be an asteroid field with an atmosphere, which…  Honestly I can’t think of a scientific explanation for how that could work either, even if it would be really cool.

Still, that doesn’t stop us from imagining the impossible and ignoring the scientific fallacies.

In my eyes each island would have its own environment, and its own ecosystem.  Some would be large enough to support multiple, and some would resemble one another in certain ways (forested islands with sweltering heat might be common, as could frigid desert landscapes), but no two would be exactly alike.  Most creatures would have evolved some capacity to fly or glide, traveling between islands, and the ones that didn’t most likely grew into entirely different species dependent on their islands.

There’d also be civilizations on the islands, obviously.  Stuff like small villages that live off the land or do things like…  hunt for skyfish i guess?  Or larger ones that mine off surrounding islands for resources to trade.  And even a few empires that own great swaths of islands and build cities on them, using huge airships to drag islands close together and make big bridges from one to another.  Maybe there’d even be sky pirates, cuz you know we ALL love those guys!

The whole thing has a ton of possibilities for stories.  I picture Rabbit coming from one of the city archipelagos and hitching a ride on a skyship to move to one of the smaller villages.  Maybe she’d even end up raising money to buy her own ship and fly through the skies.  What do you all think?

I could spend forever looking at her shapes and things and everything is always just so fluid and pleasing to look at HHHH. Blues and greens I guess? Turquoise and red too, done right. The real answers are colors are stupid and I haven’t figured them out yet.
