That small question, spoken so softly and drenched with fear… it let Somnus look up from what he was working on and look to his goddaughter with blank surprise on his face. And confusion. Ariadne stood there, in her oversized hoodie, hands fisted into the ham and almost hiding in it, avoiding looking at him. He could see the threat of tears.
And within a second Somnus had gotten up from his desk and suddenly wrapped Ariadne into a hug. Held her close and firm. One hand cupping the back of her head, where silver strands were tousled in a messy bun. Not like her usual perfect hairdo.
“What makes you ask that…?”, he questioned breathlessly, only then noticing how choked his own voice sounded. Where had that come from? Why was she saying that? Thinking that?
And hopefully not believing it…
His arms wrapped around the girl, who was like his daughter in all but blood, a little tighter.
“Why do you say that…?”
