The soft creak of your bedroom door opening was what woke you.
Your tired eyes cracked open, trying to see who had entered your room and disturbed your slumber. You assumed it was Mammon, knowing how often the boy had come into your room in the middle of the night. The figure was too tall to be him though, and it looked as if it was shivering. There was only a small patch of light, presumably coming from their DDD, but it was enough to see their outline.
“Beel?” You questioned, shifting to your side and trying your best to push yourself up. “What’s wrong?”
The demon didn’t respond, only stepping into your room and closing the door behind him. He held his phone screen towards the floor to make sure he wouldn’t trip. You scooted to the left, making room so he could crawl in beside you.
And crawl in he did. He raised the blanket and dragged it down to cover himself, enveloping himself in its warm embrace. It took a few moments for him to speak.
“I texted you, but you didn’t answer.”
You reached to the side where your DDD was sitting on your desk. You hit the power button and you were practically blinded by the sudden light. When your eyes finally adjusted, you saw you had six unread texts under Beel’s name.
[3:24am] are you up?
[3:25am] i can’t sleep.
[3:33am] can you come to my room?
[3:38am] i miss you.
[3:40am] i hope i’m not bothering you.
[4:01am] i’m coming to your room.
After reading them, you set your phone back down, settling back into bed next to him. For a moment, the demon stilled, continuing to stare at the ceiling. You were still laying on your side, your eyes glued to the shadows of his face.
Slowly, his eyes turned to you and the faint moonlight traced the curve of his nose and the sharp edge of his jaw. The purple and pink hues of his teary eyes stared back at you.
“(y/n)...”
His voice came out barely above a whisper, you had to strain to hear it even in the quiet room.
“Beel,” You whispered back, reaching your hand up to rest it on his cheek. He seemed to melt at the sudden feeling. Your thumb reached out to stroke his cheek, feeling the fresh tracks of tears. Your eyebrows furrowed in concern.
“What’s wrong, Beel?” Your voice was soft, hesitant, fearing any loud noises would startle the boy.
He choked out a sob, lunging forward and nestling his face in the curve of your neck. The wind was nearly knocked out of you, but your heart was breaking as his large figure engulfed you.
You wrapped your arms around his neck, tugging him closer. Your hand went to his hair, threading your fingers through it to gently massage his scalp.
You didn’t press, waiting for him to calm down and be comfortable enough to talk to you. His breathing was labored and wet drops hit your shoulder. His fingers clutched the back of your shirt tightly as if he was trying to stay grounded.
“I-I’m sorry,” His voice was still low, but now loud enough for you to hear. You shook your head, rubbing your other hand up and down his back. You whispered words of comfort, telling him it was okay and to take his time.
His breathing came out shaky and the hands that held you were trembling. It took him some time to finally pull from your embrace.
“I had a nightmare,” He spoke, resting his head on your pillow, “about you.”
Your gaze softened, but you didn’t speak, giving him time to continue.
“It was after... after Belphie got back,” your breath hitched. “You didn’t come back and you just laid there and there was nothing I could do about it. I couldn’t save Lilith and I couldn’t save you.”
If you thought your heart was broken before, it shattered now. You felt tears pricking your eyes as you brought him back into your embrace, burying your face in his chest. You had thought about it too, how they would react if you had just died there. You also had nightmares of his hands still around your throat.
“It’s okay, Beel. I’m here. I’m okay now. None of that was your fault, with Lilith or me. I know it’s hard but you shouldn’t blame yourself.” Your voice was meek but you tried to sound confident. You so desperately wanted to comfort him, to take away all his pain and sorrow. You wanted to scream. He was too good for this world.
“You could’ve been gone, (y/n),” He mumbled, pulling you from your thoughts, “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“I’m not going anywhere, Beel. I’m going to stay here as long as you’ll have me.”
Your words seemed to calm him a bit. The tears stopped flowing from his eyes and his grip on you loosened. You returned to whispering sweet nothings in his ear. This wasn’t the first time he had come to you because of nightmares but he had never cried this much.
“Can I hold your hand?” He asked, pulling away a little bit from you. You nodded, removing your hand from his back and lacing your fingers together.
“It’ll be okay. Just try and go back to sleep,” You prompted, pressing a lingering kiss to the top of his head, “I’ll be here if you wake up.”
One of your hands was rubbing his knuckles with your thumb while the other was kneading at his hair smoothly. You hummed tranquility, trying to make him as comfortable as possible. Out of everyone you’d ever known, Beel deserved happiness the most. With everything he did for his brothers and you, you needed to give back to him.
The rise and fall of his chest evened out, signifying to you that he had fallen back asleep. You yawned before snuggling into his broad chest, the warmth of his bulky arms enclosing you. He instinctively brought you closer.
Your voice was quiet, almost silent, when you whispered, “I’ll love you forever, Beel.”
