I think those fake women's crisis centers harm women horribly because they will help a woman through her pregnancy because they want access to the product - the baby that is BIG BUSINESS to adopt out.
I'm adopted and, despite my adoptive home not being an ideal setting (they had buyers remorse about me when they had their children), it was OK. I followed society's attitude that most adoptions are fairytale happy endings for all involved, even though I've always known that mine wasn't.
Thanks to the internet and the adoptee rights groups I've participated in over the years, I now see how damaging adoption is. The birthmothers pressured and tricked into giving up their babies (after all, if you're single and pregnant you're a slut and aren't worthy of saintly motherhood, and how can you do anything worthwhile without a man's help, right?) How the "right" (translation: white) babies go for top dollar. The discrimination against non-traditional adoptive families. The huge amounts of money lawyers and adoption agencies make, which is a conflict of interest because NO WAY do they have the baby's best interest at heart (you don't see these crisis centers and women's shelters doing much to help the mom after the baby pops out so that the mother can keep the child). The lack of PSYCHOLOGICAL screening of the adoptive parents - you wouldn't believe the number of my adoptive friends whose parents, after paying for them and waiting on a list to adopt, ended up resenting them because they didn't grow up to be just like their adoptive family in looks, personality, or beliefs. The lack of education and preparation of adoptive parents that their baby will have bonding and attachment issues, and of acceptance for a child who is not guaranteed to meet their every expectation.
Babies are big business. Babies make money. Adoption is necessary in some situations but is not always the answer to unwanted pregnancies that these crisis centers and christian "unwed mother shelters" make it out to be.
That's why I found that Oklahoma's poster so horribly offensive. They say PP doesn't help pregnant women? Hey, at least PP is not trying to steal their babies for profit!
(Thanks for letting me vent, and thanks so much for your blog. I learn something every day from your posts)
[Thank you so much for this wonderful submission! You are absolutely right. These "Crisis Centers" are awful, predatory, and not at all concerned with what's best for women OR the children after they're born.]
