BeeYou Games - sprint 2
General overview: Going from sprint one to two saw us still in the concepting phase. The designers have been busy with iterating on the gameplay and narrative while documenting it for the whole team. This meant however, that there could not be a greenlight for the artists to move away from the concept phase. In general, sprint two was defined by concepting, design, early prototyping and research.
We found out that because of our passion and motivation, we moved a bit too quickly into the ideate phase, nearly turning a blind eye to the research we still needed to do. It was an important part that multiple parties were expecting to see during this period. This is what pushed the design of the game a little bit into the background, leaving artists and engineers with little new tasks to work on besides more concepts and new iterations on the main gameplay mechanics.
Because this research took longer than expected, the game design was pushed back to the second week of sprint 2. And because the game design was not something we could just rush out the door, we were not able to finish the game design document within this sprint to push the team forward into the next stage of development.
We did manage to still be very productive within the project, the work and tasks done are as follows:
Engineers: Worked on the character controller, added a general event system that allows the player to talk with NPCs and more tool creation revolving around the dialogue system.
Artists: Some more work was done for the characters, creating more concepts that we would be able to show to the clients (can be viewed in Kalina's post), and the first concepts for the creature designs were made (can be viewed in Lisa's post). Unfortunately, because the way we need to create levels and how the design intertwines so much with the narrative, we were unable to consider a lot for the environment art.
Designers: The designers were busy with the research for the project, namely the empathy phase and define phase. After we went through that hurtle, we focused on the game design document to get everyone on the same line with the mechanics and so we can push out of the concepting phase. The narrative design document is also well underway with the main outline for each level having been decided on. Some work has also been done in Figma for the UI of the game.
Plans for the next sprint We hope to be done with the game design document very soon, so that we can get the whole group together to go over the rules we need to set for our game and the levels. We will also plan an extensive meeting with the whole group where we will look at the important tasks we need to plan when jumping over from the concept phase to the development & production phase.
Once we have discussed everything concisely, then we can start working a lot more practically, and we hope that we will be able to present more cool things other than concepts.
Core BeeYou - Sprint 0 & 1
Sprint 0: The very first week for Core Beeyou has been a lot of concepting and ideating. After everyone created their learning goals and relayed these to the team members, we divided the tasks and roles within the project.
We were very eager to start creating concepts and thinking of fun ideas relating to gameplay and the art style, but we first made sure to summarize every important bit for us in the briefing given by our client. We quickly got into contact with said client to discuss the project in general, what we can expect from each other and the product that we have to deliver in the end.
Due to how hectic the first week of IMT&S was, we decided to wait out the rest of the week (which refers to one day) until we would jump into the first sprint and start pounding on the project.
From here, we made the first arrangements for our project, like a bit of planning so that we could get a good start when entering the first sprint.
Sprint 1: The first sprint was all about concepting. During one of our first sprints, we gained a huge boon from our clients referring to an extensive survey detailing game preferences of our target group. With this information, we already had a nice foundation to start from.
Based on this research, we decided during the brainstorm on our setting and some other elements which are important for the structure of the project (2d or 3d, which platform etc.). This brainstorm was a very important step for our group as the artists had something that they could concept to share their ideas and mood for the game, while the engineers could start working on the first iteration of a playable scene within Unity.
The designers were rather busy the first sprint. Both designers had to do research into the curriculum of our target audience while researching some missing information within the empathize phase of the Design Thinking process. While doing this, they were simultaneously working on getting the first broad iteration for the narrative done as well as the first gameplay concepts.
After doing another brainstorm in during the midway point of the sprint, we had settled on a game concept;
A 2.5D game with adventure and rpg elements, that focusses on exploration and narrative. The game is set within a magical forest with different biomes, each one filled with happy and troubled forest dwellers that the player needs to help out by talking to them and learning about their woes and how to solve them.
With the first iteration of the concept ready, the artists are busy with creating concept art and mood boards, the engineers have made a character controller and first iteration of the dialogue system (and are working further on the first playable prototype), and the designers are working to document everything relating to design and research.
Our hopes for the next sprint will be to get a more clear view on our target audience and what attracts them while getting in touch with a school for future testing of our art and gameplay. When the designers are done documenting the most important elements for the development of the game, then we can discuss how to move further into the projects such as levels and environment, UI and a playable prototype.

I mean we all remember this quote right? For years I’ve tried to be someone I’m not to fit in with what I thought was the in crowd. I’ve drunk even though I didn’t want to, to not feel like I’m not cool for not drinking. I’ve tried to act like a fantastic blogger to get further towards my goal. I’ve strived to be the perfect mother because “everyone else” looked like they had their shit together. Or I’ve sat in a corner away from anyone who my inner critic deemed to important or cool to talk to me. The past week though I’ve been more me than ever before. This time last week I was on my way to Manchester to meet the Bee Inspired cohort. I mean I’ve said before We’ve SHARED ALOT with each other. We’ve bonded like you wouldn’t believe. That night we went out for dinner and everyone of us said it’s like we fit for the first time. I mean I have my best friends and my husband who I adore with all my heart and who I’ve shared amazing things with but I don’t know this just seemed a bit different somehow. 22 of us that all just know each other and get each other straight away without having to hide anything, without having to try and be something else to fit. But something happened after bee inspired. I went to @blogonuk to run a session too. Do you know I felt like I fit there too. It’s like a shift happened and just like a flick of a switch I felt confident in being me. Just as I am. But instead of running for the hills (like my inner critic has previously told me) people actually came to talk to me. Actually grabbed my arm to say hello. Do you know the one superpower you have? It’s being you. Just as you are. Because there is a Mark Darcy tribe for every single one of us be it a partner, friends, colleagues or your community. People who “like you very much just as you are!” #ilikeyouverymuchjustasyouare #justbeyou #youdoyou #beeinspired #beeyou #mytribe https://www.instagram.com/p/CUrnbVHsYfW/?utm_medium=tumblr
