merlin spent quite a long time as an old man during the early centuries of his 1500 year wait until the modern day. he wanted to fool himself into thinking he was ageing normally as well as have the foresight to know he wouldn't want to be recognised in the far future. he only occasionally uses it in the modern day but he was pretty much only ever an old man with the big white beard & all during the first couple hundred years.
