When you meet him the first time, he’s still wearing dirty gardening gloves and looks like he’s got three different leaves stuck in his messy hair. He looks barely out of university and smiles like if he stops the world will end. It’s not at all professional.

But he takes one look at you, scarred and scowling in the corner where no one will be bothered by you, and comes right over. He stripes off a glove and offers a surprisingly clean hand for shaking. “I’m Sainath,” he says. “I’m the new Herbology Professor.”

When he smiles at you, you see the sincerity in it, instead of the sun bright artificial burn.

He’s always friendly like that and about as easy to lose as a burr stuck in your socks. It’s not hard to make friends with Sainath, he’s so easy and open and normally it’d put you off, but the excited edge to him always comes off and he never backs away when you want to talk about the dark things, the things you pretend don’t exist to the rest of the staff.

He’s your best friend on staff within a year, but it takes you another to realize just how much he means to you. Anita always said you were ridiculously dense. Still, she’d expect better of you than needing an accident to realize you were in love with someone.

You always did exceed the worst expectations.

Still, your heart’s going a mile a minute as you look at Sainath and he waves his unburned hand at you and swears that these things happen, of course he was prepared for that plant to blow the glass sides of the greenhouse to pieces and that’s why he’s only got  a few cuts instead of a hundred.

He looks a mess, even worse than when you first met him, but he’s looking at you in the same sincere bright way, like he knows your front is just that and it’s up to him to reach out and make sure he knows that you know and that it’s okay.

But you can also see the shake in his hands and the false light to his smile and so you close both of your scarred hands around his alright hand and squeeze.

“Sainath,” you say, softly, so you can pretend the nurse can’t hear you. “If you ever scare me like this again, I’m going to get it in writing that you owe me a whole new heart.”

He blinks rapidly and then goes red and for once he looks away flustered because you don’t tease like he does, so he knows you mean it. You bring his fingers to your face and kiss them and maybe you’re enjoying the burning blush over his cheeks because it matches the race of your heart.

You can see Sainath sorting through a hundred possible replies. Finally, he manages to string a few words together for you. “Well, then I guess I’ll have to be more careful until the paperwork’s done.”

You squeeze hands at the same time and you can feel your smile tugging at your scars. You’re both going to be fools in love, but his dirt covered hands always feel soft on yours and you can fold him to your chest like the most comforting thing in the world.

You’re happy, incredibly so, but the world is hardly done with you yet.

The next year begins with a new History of Magic professor. You look at her and her mass of curly red hair and the predator’s grin she shoots to the room and then you look at Sai. Trouble has just arrived and he looks shell-shocked.

You sigh and lean down. “Yer gonna be as Irish as me if you keep going that color.”

Sainath smacks your arm and you grab his hand, chuckling.

i don't know ff well but if it's the one with the studs maybe you'll be able to find similar stuff in the sorta goth style shops? :O

I did have a look! Sadly I’m not cosplaying the studded bracelet version haha, it would’ve been easier to find I swear. I need something more like a sweatband though so I ended up scouring through like two JD sports and two sports direct- can’t believe they’re so hard to find??

oh man i had the same issues (wrt contacts and metal allergies) and had to get transitions. they work for me but it’s kinda expensive sometimes D:

D: yeah they're not an option for me just yet because I need a few more pressing things that are expensive as well first. but someday.
