Sewing in America
For centuries and centuries, women prepared all the clothing and household items. Nothing was mass manufactured. Imagine – learning to grow cotton or flax and weaving fabric to then cut and hand sew clothing or from leather… whew – that was a lot of work.
It wasn’t until 1755 when Charles Weisenthal, a German immigrant in London, took a patent out for a special needle which could be used for…

Putting the Crash in Crash Course
Putting the Crash in Crash Course
That sewing machine I own that has long been collecting dust is finally going to see some action! In the past couple months the library I work at has started to offer sewing classes and workshops. The problem? There’s only one instructor right now and that just won’t do, so crash course learning it is! My instruction so far has been to just do the project alongside her so I’m familiar with…

Serger or Overlock Machine
Serger or Overlock Machine
It’s so confusing, which should I buy? The Serger or Overlock machine, which one do I need most? It’s a hard decision, both do basically the same thing. They perform finishing stitches. A serger performs one task perfectly–overlocking, cutting and finishing seams in one step.
The real difference is with the make and model of the serger. Some have 8 spools of thread. WOW how confused can one…

Hello, uh... I recently bought a sewing machine and I kinda wanna just jump in and try to make something wearable, but I'd like to know what should I start myself off with?
Hello there!
Congrats on your first machine! You’re on your way to making great things. :]
For the very first step, make sure you know how to use your machine. If it came with a manual (new machines should come with either a physical or digital one), be sure to read it thoroughly. If it doesn’t have a manual (some used machines might not have them anymore), try to find one online if you aren’t familiar with sewing machines in general or if there is something quirky about your particular machine.
This site has a huge list of links to information about getting started with a machine. If you have any general questions or issues, the answer is probably there. (And if not, my ask is always open!)
For a starter project, I would go with something in a non-stretch woven fabric with mostly straight lines and minimal fancy finishing techniques (such as buttons/buttonholes, zippers, etc.). Knits can be tricky, especially if you are sewing for the first time, and while things like zippers are fairly simple, you might want to start with the easiest possible project, especially if you haven’t sewn before.
I don’t know what types of clothing you wear, but simple skirts are some of the easiest projects you can do, especially if you do an elastic waist. A basic rectangle skirt with an elastic waist will be entirely straight lines and is easy to visualize what you are doing and how the 2D fabric will turn into a 3D thing. (Plus, you don’t need a pattern, just a measuring tape.) You’ll have to size up that tutorial, since I’m assuming you aren’t a small child, but this method can be used for anything from a simple fashion mini skirt to a full lolita skirt to a breezy maxi skirt, depending on length and fullness of the skirt.
Another simple skirt to make is a circle skirt, though the curved hem might be tricky if you have no sewing experience, as well as worrying about things like which way the bias falls and letting the hem stretch out.
If skirts aren’t your jam, elastic waist shorts are pretty easy to make as well. It takes a little more effort than a skirt, since it involves some curves, but is still an easy beginner project.
If neither of those things are your jam, then a basic tote bag is also pretty simple. It involves a bit of inner structure, but it’s mostly straight lines, and fairly simple to put together. (Plus, you can get some licensed fabric at your local fabric store and make a sweet nerdy tote bag to carry all your con swag.)
I hope that helps! If you have any questions or need any more advice, just drop me another ask. :]
