Beginning of Change
A Fresh Start
Kai took in a deep breath as he stared at the door. They told him that beyond that door was his new family, the people that would give a new beginning. What would they be like? Rude? Mean? Money-grubbing like the others? He could just up and leave them at any time. Though he was slightly worried, what if they weren’t - what if they found out about him and then what? He’d end up being nothing more than a thief in their eyes. Reaching a hesitant hand to the door, he faltered a bit and frowned before the door was wrenched open on the other side. He looked up at a blue-eyed tanned skin woman, the two of them would have looked identical if she only had green eyes.
She wore a blue vest with fur at the ends, a band on her arm and pants that were baggy along with boots. Upon seeing him, she seemed lost for words simply staring. He gulped. Who was going to make the first move? Him or her?
“You must be Kai. Sorry if I startled you, I’m Korra. I’ve been waiting a while to meet you.”
She wanted to meet him?
“Er.. yeah, nice to meet you.”
She straightened up and smiled back at the orphanage workers before looking towards Kai again. She seemed a bit conflicted. Whether to reach out and take his hand or to walk on and expect him to follow. Kneeling down, she reached out a hand and placed it on his shoulder.
“Listen. I heard about you from the orphanage workers. Also from the police and higher-ups in Town Hall.”
Kai’s heart thumped in his chest. This was it, she was going to abandon him or tell him that he was no good.
“You’re okay, Kai. I know, being without your parents is a hard pill to swallow for anyone but you’re not alone anymore. Its going to take a while but I hope that you come to see me as your parent, and I hope that the three of us can have a fresh start together.”
A smile tugged at his lips before he blinked in confusion.
“The three of us?”
She grinned and patted his shoulder before leading him towards the door to the orphanage. Once they left, he could see a convertible parked outside with a dark haired woman sitting in the front seat. She looked like someone from T.V, with flowing hair and bright eyes. When she looked towards him, she seemed to have the same look as Korra first had and she fumbled a bit with opening the door. Korra got in the back and allowed him to sit in the front, she patted his shoulder and gestured to the woman.
“Kai, this is my wife Asami, Asami. This is our son, Kai.”
Son?
Looking back at Korra, his eyes held nothing but surprise. In all of the other homes that he had been to, his parents never referred to him as anything but their ‘adopted son’ or their ‘mistake’ or a ‘thief’. Though off the back even though they hadn’t known one another for long, Korra called him their son.
“Our son, hm?” Asami muttered as though weighing the words.
As if she was satisfied, a smile formed on her lips and she nodded.
“Okay. Kai, welcome to our family. My name is Asami Sato, I hope that you can come to see me as your mother.”
He nodded numbly trying to take everything in. They were just accepting everything like that? The car started up and raced out of the driveway, Korra threw her arms up laughing and Asami smiled at her wife’s childish antics. Kai looked from one to the other. This had to be some kind of dream.
