The lab I’m currently rotating in uses solid state NMR to look at membrane proteins. It’s not the most common technique in biology, but it’s pretty useful for looking at proteins that are difficult or impossible to crystalize (for x-ray diffraction structures) or just to do mechanistic studies. That being said, my lab is technically in the chemistry department and I’m the only biology student in it right now, so there’s that.
