It’s easy to be motivated for a big race, a vacation, or any other goal that means something. But what about the days when it is just you versus you and the only reward is that you get to beat the fuck out of yourself, go about your day, then get up and do it all over again the next day?
When everything is going your way, you feel as if you are impervious to losing motivation. But you can Goddamn bet that no matter how high you are flying, life will kick you in the face: financial problems, sickness, divorce, issues with your kids, losing a job, natural disaster are all very fucking real and can happen to anyone.
Your choices are pretty simple: Hide behind the shit that you are going through or double down, work harder, and keep that shit in perspective. The objective of training isn’t to help you handle the good times, it is to make us stronger when shit goes south.
The long runs, rides, day long sessions in the pool - that shit is so much more about forming your iron mind than it is about physial improvement.
Most people are afraid to suffer - they avoid the pain of sacrifice and commitment that comes with training, and when shit gets real in their life, they don’t know how to handle it.
Regardless of what you see on social media, life isn’t easy. It isn’t all about luxurious vacations, gorgeous homes, and elaborate dinners. Much more time is spent being relatively uneventful or downright sucking than any of us fucking care to acknowledge.
No matter whatever the hell or suffering you may be going through, just keep moving forward through the test and you will come out on the other side as hard and as sharp as an iron spear.
Whining about it doesn’t help, and more than likely, most people are dealing with their own bullshit so they don’t give a fuck either. It is up to you to get after it and drag yourself through whatever shit you are facing.
I did the absolute minimum physical activity a human could do for 5 years. Then, in 11 months, I went from one leg in the grave to completing a 140.6 mile Ironman triathlon.
People that knew me in my mid 30s automatically assume it was a lot of muscle memory. But that guy never ran, had never been on a bicycle and couldn’t swim 25 yards.
If muscle memory even exists, mine had Alzheimer’s. I was as low physically (and to an extent, mentally and emotionally) as a person can be.
My point? You are never too far gone - but getting a little motivation here and there won’t be enough.
Discomfort is required. When you get that low, you are already suffering, so why not flip the script and be rewarded for pain instead of being a perpetual victim?
If you embrace that? Anything is possible.
Why do I train alone? Because most people are afraid to suffer. Afraid to keep their engine in red line for a prolonged amount of time. Afraid to absolutely go to war with their self-imposed limiting beliefs. Afraid to push beyond normal boundaries. I know a lot of people love to talk about getting after it, grinding, and all of that bullshit, but aside from breathing a little harder snd breaking a sweat, are they really pushing the limits of impossibility? This isn’t just about fitness - it transfers across all aspects of life. Look at your long term goals and find ways to chop those motherfuckers down to where they become short term goals. Never be afraid to push yourself beyond collapsing - because you will never forget the feeling of getting back up and pushing forward. Blessing or a Curse? Are you doing anything that you always said you never had time for? Opening a new internet business? One that the government cannot tell you that you can’t earn and provide for your family. Working out? You don’t need a fancy gym. Hanging out with your kids and spouse? Learning a new skill? YouTube is the greatest knowledge base in the history of mankind. Time has never been a valid excuse, but now, it is your ally. Where is your mindset? Is this “shutdown” of society a curse or a blessing? Will you come out of it stronger or decimated? That choice is yours. #behardonyourself #ironman #entrepreneur #quarantine #motivation #workout (at Krugerville, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-iCoKNHOqv/?igshid=1vr3lblwiizq2
Friday is the King of Excuse Days. “I worked out 3x this week.” “I didn’t workout at all this week, I will start again Monday.” “I have too much to get done before the weekend.” “I ate like shit this week but Monday I will clean it up.” Same excuses, a different week. People need a dose of reality and they need to be hard on themselves and stop the excuses. Everyone gets tired, but lazy fucking people stay tired. Then they don’t do get off their asses, so they they don’t do shit. Get fatter. Get lazier. Do less. It is a vicious cycle, fueled by excuses and desire to avoid discomfort. But how fucking comfortable is having no energy? Being hungover? Taking selfies at bullshit angles to hide fat? Human eyes don’t have filters. Either make a decision to be different or keep making those excuses that are keeping you overweight, tired, and sloppy. Time to stop being a self-loathing pussy and do something awesome that inspires others to get off their asses and become bad asses as well. #ironman #noexcuses #dontbeapussy #behardonyourself #swimbikerun https://www.instagram.com/p/ByafQNgHThA/?igshid=8c50wvbiak0c
Sum Of Our Choices
Our current position in life is a sum of all of our choices. It isn't circumstance, it isn't someone else's fault. It isn't the bad shit that happened to us. It's the SUM OF OUR OWN CHOICES.
The positive side of that? Wherever the fuck we are to end up in the future is also the SUM OF OUR OWN CHOICES. You can feel sorry for yourself and keep making the same choices (which is what most people do) and you'll stay in the same place. Or you'll start living the life you're supposed to live and become a bad motherfucker, doing shit that nobody believes you can do.
As soon as you realize that you are to blame for your current place in life, you'll also realize that YOU ARE IN CONTROL of where you're going.
You're not a victim, so it's time to let go of the bullshit excuses and self-defeating inner thoughts and become a bad motherfucker.
Being anything else just isn't worth it.
Actions speak louder than words. Those actions show what you actually want. You cannot say you want to look amazing, yet you can’t pass up a happy hour for the gym and eat like shit constantly. Those actions show that you are content with your current body. You can’t get in better shape by sleeping in and missing workouts. You can’t get lean off of hamburgers and pizza. You can’t get sober by drinking. You simply cannot change by being the same. Decide: Do you actually WANT it, or just PRETEND to want it because you know you NEED it? #workoutmotivation #life #behardonyourself #ironman #ironmantraining #plantbased #sober #spartan #triathlon #endurance #bodytransformation https://www.instagram.com/p/BxrzTg4H079/?igshid=17cog7scz3j84
