a/n: when i put it to a poll of what snippet to post, dnd au was the winner so this is what i've got! this is a sequel to my prev dnd au behrastra fic, but also an expansion of this fictober prompt lol... this isn't really behrastra but behrad n spooner arguing, aka a dynamic i really ought to write more of.
As Behrad headed back down to the shop, his heart was still racing. It felt like his old instincts had taken over, the support there to make sure his sisters didn’t get themselves into trouble. But that role had always filled him with anxiety. He couldn’t let his composure slip.
They made it clear that he didn’t have to look out for them, that was their job. But as the sibling who hadn’t inherited the family heirloom or dope storm magic, he had found ways to make himself useful. That was why they let him tag along on their adventures when he was just sixteen.
He could hear the clomping of Spooner’s boots following him, but ignored her until he was in the backroom where he kept extra inventory. Healing potions were in high demand, so he ordered in bulk, along with what he made himself. Alchemy. That was another skill he’d taught himself.
“What is it?” he asked her, finally.
“I’m trying to help my friend,” Spooner fired back.
Behrad turned to face her. She didn’t look too well-off herself, a bruise forming under her left eye. “How about you worry about yourself a little?”
She reached up to the bruise, wincing as she felt it was still tender. “Okay, they got a few hits on me.”
“Here.” He handed her a basic healing potion. “Patch yourself up.”
Spooner rolled her eyes, but she uncorked the bottle. Leaning against the shelves with a heavy exhale, she said, “You’re pretty powerful for a shopkeep.”
He didn’t look back at her as he grabbed a potion of superior healing. “Yeah. I used to adventure.”
She took a swig and hummed. “Figured.”
Behrad set the potion on a lower shelf and turned back to her. “Don’t tell me this is your pitch for me to be your Feywild guru again.”
“It’s not.” Spooner’s glare was severe. “Then you know what you’re getting into with Astra, don’t you?”
“Of course I do.” How could he not know the pain of being away from the people you loved for weeks, months, years at a time, not knowing if they were okay or when they’d return? When he and his sisters had finally returned home after he’d been resurrected, his mom had hugged him so hard and refused to let go. If it was up to her, he would’ve stayed there forever.
“It did mean a lot to me. That you hung onto everything from my mom.” Her glare shifted towards her potion bottle, staring at the narrow mouth. “You know that your party becomes your family out there, don’t you?”
The guffaw that burst out of Behrad was so loud it was almost rude. “I literally adventured with my sisters for years. I know putting your party before anyone else.”
She swished the potion around, then downed the rest of it. As she did, he spotted the ring on her left pinky - the same ring Astra had sported, the one that’d left a burn into his beard when it told her they were in trouble. “Huh.”
“She really cares about Gideon, huh?”
“She cares about both of us,” Spooner said sternly. “But - she doesn’t want to lose people. We’re the only people she’s got, you know?”
“You and Gideon, or the two of you and me?” Behrad asked.
She shrugged. “We don’t talk about stuff like that.”
“Still, I got the message. Don’t screw this up.” He picked up the potion again, his grip so tight around the mouth that he was afraid he might break the bottle. “Good talk.”
Behrad watched Spooner set the empty potion bottle on the table near the door, then walk out. As the door closed behind her, he sagged against the shelves. Last night they’d just cleared up that they were dating, and now Spooner was giving him shovel talks.
He did some deep breathing, trying to steady himself before he went back upstairs. This was the most action he’d seen in years, good or bad. But in the moment, it was like his old reflexes had returned. Even Wild Shaping again into a bird had felt… freeing.
That didn’t mean he wanted to hit the road again. Absolutely not. But maybe it wasn’t as scary as he’d recalled.
