Every teen at some point of their teen lives, becomes independent and takes the reins on their own lives. So why can’t the same to be said and done by artists? Canadian pop star Veronica, who is no stranger to the music industry has said goodbye to her Disney/Family Channel past and said hello to a evolution of both her sound and image. Even with this visible change, Veronica is the same person she has always been...the only thing that has changed is her music.
With a team surrounded by her, that one can consider a family rather then by a system composed of hierarchal organization she’s ready to share her music with the world. Her new single “What Happened” is a testament to that.Amandah Opoku in a two part interview series, caught up with Veronica to discuss her new sound, fashion and more! Check out Part 1 of the interview HERE and continue on to read Part 2!
Amandah: What’s your favourite go to accessory?
Veronica: I would have to say my watch! I wear it almost everyday and it tells me the time, so it’s good. It keeps me on time for everything
Amandah: I’m one of those people who hasn’t started their watches. I’m lazy, and so if the battery dies I won’t replace it
Veronica: I know what you mean. That happened to me once and I left it for a week, and I was like I can’t live like this anymore. Because I look at it all the time, so I was like okay let’s go. Lol
Amandah: If you weren't pursuing music as a career, what would you be doing?
Veronica: If I wasn’t doing anything music related, I’m not sure if I would be in school. Just because how I learn is a little bit different. I think I would be in interior design so I could be a little bit creative, and still have some part of music in there
Amandah: So what’s next for you?
Veronica: I’ll be releasing more music, probably a couple more singles because we are always writing, music is always being made. It’s awesome to feel that I have these songs that represent me so well, I just want everyone to hear them. Especially people who have heard “What Happened”. I just feel like, everyone’s excited to see what’s next. And I think they’d be really excited to see what’s coming soon.
Amandah: So there’s been this whole debate about singles and albums/EPs. As an artist would you rather just release single after single or release a compilation such as an album?
Amandah: On Spotify they have these playlists composed of singles and people can just go through that and find what they like instead of sitting through and listening to an album
Veronica: I would do single after single because it gives people something fresh to hear overtime they see just one thing. Yes, you can release an album but to me I would rather release singles that are a little different from each other and give people different vibes of what I’m feeling without giving them too much. I’m a single after single people
Amandah: I agree!
Veronica: I think traditionally how that style was of releasing a single, an EP and then an album. Because people have…
Amandah: a short attention span
Veronica: Exactly! Their attention span is shorter. They’re going to hear one song and they may not even listen to the full song. They may just listen from 30 seconds to 1 minute. I’ve even be hearing from people in the music industry, that songs are only going to be 1 minute long now. Like who is actually going to listen to a full song?
Amandah: That’s crazy! 1 minute? What could you do in a minute?
Veronica: That’s the thing, people want to hear everything they can in a minute because of the short attention span. People can click on everything they want at anytime and it happens so fast with the internet and the media. That would suck if it happened, but at least if it’s single after single you can still have that 3 minute of awesomeness.
Amandah: You’ve done a 360 with your sound. It’s indieish because it fits in my Indie playlist and I can also move it to my Pop playlist. I love the sound. How did this new sound come about?
Veronica: Thank you! For the past couple of years I’ve been working with producers going to LA, New York down to the Islands doing writing camps with people from all over the world. It was amazing, a really great experience. But I wasn’t really being my true myself because I feel like people were telling me what kind of music to do. Instead of me telling people what I wanted to do. I kept being put in a box and this is what like you should sound like. It was never V what do you want. Then I met Adam and Miles, who are my producers, co-producers…my team. I met them almost a year ago and they were the first group of people to ask me what I wanted and what I was interested in. It wasn’t even about what are you interested in today, but what music do you love? What genres do you like? I went as far back as saying that I love Frank Sinatra. And that kind of vibe, and it just worked with us. I trust them and they trust me, but it’s always what I feel and what I want opposed to what they want because we are all on that same level.
Amandah: Teamwork, I love that!.
@jc_astronot_ acts asks how is life different from before you started to now?
Veronica: I feel like I’ve always been singing but when I was in school it was very different because I wasn’t singing as much. I wasn’t being as creative as I wanted and I wasn’t very happy. And that led me to be more of an anxious person and sometimes i get over excited by things. It definitely led to a lot of anxiety I think and now the more I work on my music, the less that anxious Veronica becomes. The less anxious, lonely and depressed Veronica are present. Now that I can do music full time, I’m always me. So that’s awesome!
Amandah: Thank you for sitting down with me Veronica! Before we can go, is there anything you'd liked to say to your fans, and our viewers?
Veronica: Check out my latest single and video for “What Happened”. Let me know what you think! To my fans and those who have grown up with me from family channel, I’m not going anywhere and I’m going to keep releasing music. I’m really exciting for you to hear my new music because i love it a lot and you will too!
