9. How did they feel when each sibling was born or arrived? (excited, jealous, confused, or indifferent?)
adrian didn't really know what to expect from a baby sibling, he was eight when zarah was born and had only ever heard about classmates' siblings before then. but his grandparents were excited, so he assumed his parents were too. he liked helping his dad and grandfather paint zarah's nursery, but he wasn't that interested in the whole thing until zarah actually got there. he was surprisingly good with her, though it helped that she was a relatively peaceful baby, but ultimately he got a little bored because babies really don't do a lot and he was eight. when rayne was born, he knew a bit more of what to expect and he was twelve so he was slightly more aware of his parents & the general Vibes. and they were Off. christian didn't want another kid, but he articulated this by shutting himself off completely, starting to treat himself to more expensive vices, while miranda was still clinging to this idea that she could still have this perfect family and it'd finally make her happy. and to twelve year old adrian, he just knew mom and dad weren't happy and he didn't know why. so initially he was apprehensive of rayne's existence at all, looking for something to blame, but then she came home. and she was so different to zarah, she was loud and she was laughing and she was trying to walk as soon as she could so she could run and she was the kind of baby who would hit pots with wooden spoons and giggle at the noise and she was just so different to the house she'd been brought into. zarah was only five, but she was relatively quiet for a kid her age, liked drawing and being read to and kept all her stuffed animals lined up on her bed; rayne did roly-polys through puddles of mud in the back garden and put handprints on her grandmothers nice white fence. and adrian felt really protective of her the more he watched her grow. he'd been younger when zarah was born, and zarah was also focused on a lot more by her parents. christian kind of pretended rayne didn't exist, not an easy feat to accomplish, but he was usually so far out of it he managed somehow. miranda realised a few years in that three kids wasn't giving her the life she thought she wanted, and it started to tip her over the edge, so adrian was rayne's primary caretaker almost her whole life. she adored him, and he loved her back, did his best to keep an eye out for her when he realised their parents weren't.
zarah really wanted to be an older sibling, especially wanted a little sister, but she didn't have rayne's magnetism that made teachers laugh or other kids flock to her, she exceeded expectations in school and to her grandparents (to whom she was the favourite), but she, like her brother, missed out on the extrovert gene. she wanted a little sister but she kind of wanted one who was like her; whereas rayne didn't want to listen to zarah make up stories, she wanted to run about and act them out, she didn't want to listen to adrian read at night like zarah did, she wanted to build block cities and knock them down. around the age of seven, when rayne's 2 year old boisterous side really started to show, she started wondering if she liked it better when it was just her and adrian. (over time, and especially when it just becomes the three of them, zarah gets to let herself be a little reckless and wild too, and rayne discovers her sister tells the best stories)
