If you were to stand outside the front door of a dilapidated, abandoned old mansion, and you were to hear strange noises coming from inside, you would probably imagine the worst. Every creak could spell disaster, every groan could be the sound of the ghosts inside warning you to stay away. In other words, your imagination would go wild and you might grow fearful just envisioning what you think is inside. Once in the front door, though, you could discover that the creaking was simply an old door hinge that needed oiling and the groaning was simply the sound of the settling house.
