13 - “You’re lying. You’re blushing.” ~ “Shut up! No I’m not!”
Eileen didn’t know what to expect of her latest partner. What she did know, however, that this new detective was young, new. She hated the fact that the Lieutenant thought that she was so old that she’d be reduced to a mentor to this detective that recently transferred in from some far off department who knows where. Eileen didn’t want to play mentor. You get shot once, and suddenly you’re not allowed to play hard anymore and you have to teach the new kid who’s gonna take your place. It was ridiculous. Eileen certainly wasn’t happy about that.
Her new partner was late to their very first call: a bank robbery turned hostage situation. When her partner did show up, all the elusive Minerva Orland did was give a half-assed wave, walked straight past the police line and right up to the door of the bank- without backup, unarmed, and with a box of pizza in her hand to masquerade as a delivery girl. Eileen just watched with resigned annoyance, convinced that her time with her new partner was at an end since surely she was going to get herself killed in there. Gunshots fired a few minutes after Minerva stepped inside, and Eileen shook her head in admonishment. Yet... the hostages all scurried out of the building moments later and Minerva followed once everyone was out. “All the robbers are dead!” she had yelled to the other policemen before sinking her teeth into a slice of pizza she snagged from the box she left inside. Her gaze went to Eileen, who had stormed right up to Minerva, and Minerva just extended her free hand out for a handshake.
“Minerva Orland. Looks like I’m your new partner.” She had stated with a smirk, seconds before the bank behind her exploded and shot right up in flames.
After the explosion, Eileen had just stared at Minerva with an incredulous look. Not only did Minerva step into the bank without backup, unarmed, and with a box of pizza, Minerva stepped into the bank without backup, unarmed and with a box of pizza when the robbers inside had guns AND bombs as a failsafe.
And that’s when Eileen realized that her new partner was a fucking maniac.
Minerva Orland was a fucking maniac. She had a complete disregard for her life, and operated as if she didn’t care if she died in the process. Reckless was too tame a word to describe her. Minerva once shot Eileen in the ankle so that she’d fall and not take a headshot from a sniper. She also jumped through a glass window of a hotel with a bomb in her hands, threw it into the air before it could detonate, then she landed in the outdoor pool lord knows how many feet below. Eileen learned very quickly that Minerva stopped at nothing to get the job done, even if her life was the cost. However, the more Minerva worked alongside Eileen, or rather, the more Eileen forcibly tamed the beast that was Minerva Orland, Minerva started to think a bit more rationally, and started to take a smarter approach rather than the reckless one. Minerva was still Minerva, but she was gradually starting to think about herself before getting herself into ridiculous situations. Eileen liked to boast that it was all her doing, and she figured she was right after one conversation they had.
“You’re changing, Orland.” Eileen commented after one particular case. Her fingers went beneath Minerva’s chin and forced it upwards so that Minerva’d meet her eye, “Am I finally getting through to someone as idiotic as yourself? It’s like you’re finally thinking twice before going to throw your life away. You think you’ll miss me if you die, don’t you?” She teased, a smirk ever present on her lips.
“Don’t flatter yourself. You can only jump off of so many rooftops in a chase before it gets old. Taking a ladder this time was just a way to switch things up. Can’t become too predictable, can I?” Minerva shot back, though despite the devious grin she had mustered up, her quips faltered in delivery.
“You’re lying.” Eileen observed, quirking an eyebrow and leaning closer. Her voice dropped to a whisper, almost scandalized in tone, “You’re blushing.”
Minerva tore her gaze away, gritting her teeth and letting out a low growl. Though, that did nothing to stop the embarrassed color on her cheeks... “Shut up! No, I’m not!”
Eileen only laughed at that.
Minerva Orland was a fucking maniac, but with Eileen’s influence, maybe she was starting to grow a little bit smarter.
