It was a deep kind of cold in the South that year. The kind of cold that slides beyond your skin and settles right on your bones, turning your hands and feet numb and your ears bright red. The kind of cold that seeps into the trees and the grass and kills the mistaken buds before they had a chance.

But for Caitlyn and her guest, the cold was the kind that tapped against the windows, and was pushed back by the curtains. Her fire crackled merrily in the hearth, and the blankets strewn across the sofas and rocking chair added to the cozy atmosphere.

“Would you like something to drink, hun? I’ve got coffee, tea, cocoa, anything.”
