I don't know if people are interested in these kind of posts from me, but I'm making an effort to find more music I like this year, (my playlists have become a little stale) and I thought every now and then I might share some albums I've been enjoying!

So far this month, some stand outs have been:

Bloodline by Mon Rovîa (listen)

This is gorgeous folk/country music with some outstanding lyricism, exploring themes of growing up, war and identity. I love Pray the Devil back to Hell which is about the civil war in Liberia and women's role in protesting and securing peace talks, and I love, love, love art that is beautifully moving and sends you down a research rabbit hole. Perfect album for sitting with the lyrics up and really thinking about it. Also his voice is absolutely sublime.

2. Blurring Time by Bells Larsen (listen)

This was a rare win for the tiktok algorithm, because when I found out what this album was I got teary just at the idea. Bells is a trans man who recorded every song on this album as a duet, doing one vocal line pre-transition and the second vocal line post-transition. It's another folky, introspective album with some really pretty melodies and I'm just so emotional and happy that something like this exists.

3. Metamorphosis Complete by Infinity Song (listen)

I feel like I've been sleeping on this band so don't make my mistake! The harmonies, guys, the harmonies!!! This album is stunning, some really big beautiful songs and some that are really fun, and the way their voices work together gives me goosebumps. There's a beautiful cover of Fleetwood Mac's Dreams on this album, and Hater Anthem is such a fun vibe and the biggest middle finger you could give to people who just wanna complain about eveeerything.

Favorite musical artist / group you started listening to this year?

ooh tough, I feel like I re-listened to many of my faves this year (I SAW HOTEL MIRA FOR THE 10TH+ TIME, PUP,)

but!! I think I will have to say Bells Larsen, I absolutely fell in love with his songwriting this year and got to meet him at a concert! (I was so flustered and dissociated but he signed my album so! win! and we talked in French together!)

'I just don't feel like it's worth the risk,' said T. Thomason who, along with Bells Larsen, just cancelled American shows

Toronto singer-songwriter Bells Larsen and Halifax pop artist T. Thomason have both announced today that they are cancelling their U.S. tour dates and a festival appearance, respectively, due to safety concerns and visa policies that discriminate against trans artists. "I received an email on Tuesday from the American Federation of Musicians stating that I am no longer able to apply for a visa because U.S. Immigration now only recognizes identification that corresponds with one's assigned sex at birth," Larsen posted on Instagram. "To put it super plainly, because I'm trans (and have an M on my passport), I can't tour in the States." Larsen has had to cancel six tour dates following the upcoming release of his sophomore album, Blurring Time, which was crafted to follow Larsen's transition, harmonizing the artist's pre- and post-transition voice.
