What I’m thinking about before class this morning. We’re working with this ‘mind’s eye’ when we are writing a scene of a story or drawing a scene of a story. Something inside is taking shape and moving from our inside to our outside. I’m so interested in what my students are experiencing when we draw and write together. Where are the images we are working with before the appear on the paper in front of us? Is an image a picture? A word? Something that somehow feels alive enough to make the passage from interior to the wider world. There is a sensation this gives. POWER PLANT BELOIT 2018 by Amanda Browder

At Beloit College and the decommissioned power plant in Beloit, Wisconsin which is now called the Powerhouse. The piece is made from 100% donated fabrics and sewn together with the generous volunteers of Beloit, Wisconsin. The piece was put on a crane in the transitioning power plant. It allowed viewers to watch it move over the space, and to reminisce about the past and future of Beloit at this time.

Today’s lesson: review of Modified Brunetti style of drawing a person. It’s as easy as drawing a stick man and if you do it enough, your own natural style slowly takes over. It’s like a trellis for the vibe of your natural line. Whenever I’m stuck I remind myself to use this style and draw within a time limit, maximum three minutes. I’m the 2023 Mackey Chair in Creative Writing. This is the door to my pad. The drawings are by my students who are helping me understand what happens when people who quit drawing a long time ago start up again. These drawings were done with eyes closed. Three colors, one minute per color, one drawing right on top of the other. My instruction is “Close your eyes and draw a full human skeleton in one minute. Don’t peek! Go!! “. Somehow a very lively drawing shows up with so much more going for it than an accurate representation of a skeleton. And the students were surprised. And also happy. And they were interested in their classmates drawings in a new way. Drawing itself has an energy that transforms the mood of the class. If I’m studying anything right now, that’s it. What is this energy that drawing can bring to a classroom? It feels vital. And it brings about a state of mind that is perfect for writing stories. At the center of both drawing and writing is something my teacher, Marilyn Frasca, called an Image. Once you know what that feels like— to be in contact with something that is in contact with you, there seems to be a natural way forward that isn’t thinking. It’s something else.
