The River Spirit | The Stink Spirit

Despite being unnamed, the river spirit remains a fundamental character to Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited away. The message being that the new generation should aim to be compassionate towards the environment and be more conscious towards the mass pollution that we are enabling day by day.

I'm still working with forms from the figures in my last post, He Never Came Back, the pared down creature, the black sheep as I sometimes call it. I made these two figures in the last year, starting them at the beginning of the pandemic. The figures have become more abstract, pushing towards abstraction. These are covered in obsessive marking, stitching and thousands of buttons. The second and third photos are close-ups of the surface texture. These were made for a museum show that was cancelled, which is fitting as they were made about the reaction I witnessed to people who may have been unwitting vectors, and the pandemic led to the cancellation.
