I went to your talk at Wellesley and it was amazing! I'm really curious about the company documentary, you mentioned that Wellesley was also going to featured? How? And when will it be out? Thank you so much for the awesome talk :)

Glad you asked! The documentary is called Conlanging: The Art of Crafting Tongues. It’s being directed by Britton Watkins, and the producers are me, Paul Frommer (creator of Na’vi from Avatar), Marc Okrand (creator of Klingon), Christine Schreyer (creator of Kryptonian from Man of Steel), and David Salo (creator of the Orc language from The Hobbit). Principle photography is still going on right now, but it’s almost done. We expect the film to be released some time next year, but there is no firm date yet. Regarding Wellesley specifically, Wellesley is unique in that it’s one of a handful of colleges where you can take a course on constructed languages. The course is currently being offered, taught by professor of linguistics Angela Carpenter, and I was brought to Wellesley by Prof. Carpenter and her class (in fact, the one who reached out to me initially was @belovedlittlecorpse, who’s taking Prof. Carpenter’s class right now). Footage was shot of the course itself, and there were also a couple of interviews with Prof. Carpenter and a couple students.

Now, having said that, I’ll tell you the same thing we tell everyone who’s been interviewed for the documentary. We have literally (not figuratively: literally) hundreds of hours of footage, and this is going to be an hour and a half documentary. There’s no way we’re going to be able to use all the footage we’ve got. We won’t know what gets in and what doesn’t until filming is done and we actually go and do an edit of the film. Consequently, there’s no guarantee that the Wellesley footage will be in the final film. There’s a good chance it will, as it’s only one of three conlang classes we got footage of, but there’s a limited amount of space, and tons of footage. So bear that in mind.

So yeah, not a lot of info is out and about at the moment, because we’re still filming, but stay tuned! More coming later!

Do you ever give talks about your work around the country? I'm a linguistics student in Massachusetts and I know there would be plenty of interest if you ever did!

Someone who was a grad. student at Harvard once almost kind of invited me to give a talk there, but then that student went to Israel, and it never materialized. I was at LCC3 in Providence, Rhode Island that’s near Massachusetts, but other than that, I’ve never been there. I do go and give talks pretty much wherever I’m invited, unless there’s a conflict. Let your department know I’m down. I’ve got a book coming out September 29th, if that helps.

Hello, I'm a sophomore in college studying linguistics. What advice would you give those wanting to get into conlang? Do you know of any relevant internship/study opportunities out there? Thank you! -Joanna

If you want to conlang, the answer is simple: conlang. Create a language right now! Bam! You’re doing it! That’s all there is to it.

If you’re talking about getting a job creating languages, there really isn’t a field. Right now I’m an anomaly. I’m not sure if there’s enough work to support an industry in film and television. There is plenty of potential in literature, though. In either case, bookmark the LCS Jobs Board and watch out for jobs posted there. It’s the only place where such jobs will be posted anywhere on the internet. It’s a competitive process, though, so to compete with seasoned language creators, you will need to be a seasoned language creator, for which, again, see item 1 above.

The best way to get better at creating languages, at the moment, is to join one or more of the various conlang communities (and actually being active in more than one community is probably your best bet, so you can get the best of what various conlangers have to offer). Luckily many conlangers put their work on the web, so it’s easy to do research. Check out some of the better conlangs there are (e.g. Ithkuil, Kēlen, Okuna, Moten, to name a few) and see what they do. There are plenty of exemplars to work from.

So get crackin’! No time like the present! I started creating languages as an undergraduate, and I can assure you it’s a good time to get started. :)

When I was in middle school the used bookstore by my house went out of business and reduced all of their prices to $0.25 per paperback / $1 for hardcovers. Consequently, I now have about sixty Stephen King books.
