Belum Caves

Well, life in general is a roller coaster ride....You have downs and downs and then some ups and what probably determines our ability to overcome these rides are our bonds, relationships and friendships. A sudden plan, a call with an old friend and we left to the largest and the longest cave system in India 'for a break from work and life'.

After a long car drive from Bengaluru and with some large philosophical discussions on life and work, we reached this beautiful lake after Anantapur called Singanamala Cheruvu. A mandatory pic stop and right opposite to that we could see large windmill installations on hills in that area.

Reached Belum caves after a good 6hr drive and began descending into the caves expecting them to be cool but Oh boy!! It was sultry and hot.

The caves were indeed large and breathtaking in view. They were natural but clearly a lot of maintenance work had been done for its beautification by various government departments. The longer we walked, the darker it got and the deeper insides were illuminated with artificial lights.

Some of the path was quite narrow and I wondered how would the two of me would fit at once. Both of us were amazed with the formations, rocky patterns of the quartz and black limestones and were surprised to see statues and meditation halls within the caves. I wondered who would have the audacity to meditate inside these cave with such high temperatures and no natural ventilation points.

Caves are synonymous with low ceilings that would often cause problems to someone of my height yet these were large, very very large except 1 point where I had to bend. Clearly, a lot of work done by the government to convert it into a comfortable tourist spot. The caves were 3.2 kms long while only 1.5km were open to visitors. That seems small theoretically but feels large once we start walking drenched in the humid conditions.

We reached the lowest point in that cave that was about 50m deep called Patalaganga where we could see fresh water that just disappeared into the rocks. Records say that its connected to some wells and a dead river many many kms away.

Taj is one of my oldest friends and its always a pleasure meeting her albeit we havent met for years together. A bond that was formed at school has only strengthened over the years and its admirable to see her fight all the challenges of her life with a sheer smile and positivity. This trip was memorable and amazing with some wonderful intellectual conversations. And to add, she has very good driving skills :)

We left Belum caves witnessing the majestic Buddha statue at its exit into the sunset drive on the way back to Bengaluru. A soul refreshing drive that was much needed to get us back into the groove of life.
