during the illidari starting questline, if you die illidan talks to you. Keep in mind this is during the raid on black temple, and you are currently in another corner of the universe. we know from when you contact illidan during the order hall quest line that it requires a lot of fel energy to do so. 

Illidan isn’t brooding on top of black temple, he’s using the skull of gul’dan to keep an eye on the illidari
