Dear Gus & Baby #2,

I took most of the day off to spend time with Mom. We hadn't had a date in a while, so we made today a day date. We lunched at 42 Bar & Table, perused the shops in SoMa, had some ice cream, then stopped at the McVays' when we saw Ben on the porch.

A photographer from SavvyKids Magazine stopped by at 6pm to take our family photo on the porch to go with an article they're writing about...well...basically how you two hit the jackpot when you got me for a dad.

After my run today, I walked down to the McVays' to borrow a book (THE COMPLETE ENNEAGRAM by Beatrice Chestnut) and ended up hanging out for a bit. Evie and Isaac have grown so much.

After school today, we picked up Suki because she’s going to Yiayia and Papou’s house for a few days while you and Mom tag along with me on a work trip to the Gulf Coast. On the way to YP’s, we got caught by a red light and I don’t like sitting at red lights, so we took a shortcut down Booker Street. The McVays were on their porch, so we stopped in the middle of the road to talk for a minute. We’re hoping now that we’re in our new house we’ll run into them more often.

Dear Gus,

You’ve been fighting a cough lately, so we dropped you with Yiayia tonight so Mom and I could bring dinner to the McVays, who have a new baby--Isaac.

We talked a lot over dinner about what starting the parenting process all over again is like, but we also talked about our family possibly moving. We aren’t looking to move, but we always keep an eye on available houses. I stumbled across one not far from the McVays that seemed underpriced. I sent Mom photos and she fell in love. I made some calls, we went and looked at it, made some more calls, then made an offer on it this morning.

We like our house now and we like where we are for a lot of reasons. We love living close to Yiayia & Papou, the Nicks, Johnny’s family, and Charlie’s family. And we love the idea of you going to Crestwood Elementary just up the street. But, for the right price, it will be hard for us not to make the move across the river, where we’ll be closer to your daycare the next few years. We’ll also be closer to the McVays, Beverly & Gary, and Norah & Bo. And we love Hillcrest with its restaurants, bars, and coffee shops we’d be able to walk to. I guess we’ll see how it will turn out soon.

Dear Gus,

Mom and I haven’t been happy with your daycare lately because we’ve caught them feeding you dairy multiple times, addressed it each time, yet it doesn’t seem to make a difference. So, today we visited a different school, where your friend Evie goes. We loved it and hope to have you in school there in the fall.

I wanted to sneak a picture of her in her classroom coloring, but decided that might be creepy, so I didn’t take a photo. Instead, here’s a photo from three years ago, when Mom and I went to the McVays’ to meet Evie for the first time.

After ARS tonight, a crew ventured down the street to the Elks Lodge for their open house. I had no idea the building was even still occupied. Turns out there are people who hang out there every day. We got the grand tour and we toyed with the idea of Mom joining.

Tonight my writer’s group had its fourth annual Bonfire, Books, and Beer event, which is always a lot of fun. Not as many readers this year, but some good ones. And we had some new faces. Unfortunately, you and Mom had to stay home because we didn’t want you to get cold, and everything happened after your bedtime, so you wouldn’t have been happy anyway. Maybe in a year or two you can join.
