Blues rock songwriter and guitarist, Ben Poole, has recorded his 5th album, his first ‘live’ release. Recorded in 2019 across 3 venues in July, Old Schoolhouse, Barnsley, Half Moon, Putney, and Bootleggers in Kendal. Its a double album of 14 tracks, which includes a short intro, performed with Steve Amadeo on bass, and Wayne Proctor on drums, Wayne also mixed and mastered the recordings at Superfly Studios.
Suitably, ‘loosened up’, Ben leads with dirty guitar over pumping rhythm, into ‘Take It No More’, lyrics dispensed, Ben cuts deeply into the groove, scything, chopping, blood spilt, he turns back to the closing lines. Certainly an impressive opening, though I’ve always felt Ben’s voice is not quite at the level of his guitar skills. I doubt his followers would give a monkeys for my thoughts though, and that’s ok, we can all agree on the six string savagery. Steppng forward, its time to ‘Start The Car, a punchy song, Wayne and Steve setting the pace, as Ben cranks the ignition, the motors on fire, a supercharged driving track that will have you reaching for the your keys.
Things start to get serious, as Ben pulls deals out a classic hand, ‘Have You Ever Loved A Woman’, is like starting with a dough ball, kneading in some slick olive oil, stretching and working it, letting it ferment a little, by now we’re halfway into the track, and the whole is slotted into the oven as Ben adds the impassioned lyrics, between splashes of sweet guitar. The boys kick in with a steady pulse, before the mix starts to rise, getting scorchingly hot, and one delicious bake, impossible not to enjoy every bite.
Ben layering dirty guitar over thundering drum and bass, takes us, ‘Further On Down The Line’, looking for better times, a hard assed burner, thats hard not to enjoy. Before we flip the discs, the wicks lowered a bit for the slow burning, ‘Don’t Cry For Me’, a sad but beautiful track that of course, builds to a searing zenith with Ben soaring high, bending and stretching strings, keeping us locked in, eager to delve into the second disc.

The headphones are on, drink to hand, and I’m in the zone, Ben’s voice is finding its way through, maybe its directly related to the alcohol content!
‘Lying To Me’, brings back punchy beat, and heavy, rock groove, a head bangers delight, a Todd Sharper/Ian Siegal song, given a full makeover with pumping bass, gritty, threatening lyrics, and savage guitar, one of the shorter tracks, but it sticks with you. Mark Knopfler’s, ‘I Think I Love You Too Much’, slips in and down, like oysters and champagne, silky smooth, by Ben’s standard, lovely, a chilled delight.
Ben, had a hand in scribbling, ‘Found Out The Hard Way’, keeping chilled, as the steady pulse drops in, Ben’s in lamentful moods, as the mellow guitar licks his wounds. Wayne sets up a tattoo, the pace lifts as Ben’s pulse quickens in anticipation, putting the question, are you going to, ‘Stay At Mine’. Not pondering too long on what or who, inspired Ben to write this one, but the excited, expectancy is soundly evident.
Now, we reach the final pair of tracks, and they amount to a meaty 30 minutes, Ben had a hand in both scripts, leaving himself plenty of time to play, the first leviathan, is. ‘Anytime You Need Me’, which has some lovely dark bass embedded in there by Steve, there’s a lot to enjoy in the disjointed funk, so stick with it. A gorgeous ride, as resources are Poole’d, burning bright toward the climatic finish. Closing song is the meaty, ‘Time Might Never Come’, and, Wayne sets up a solid drum rhythm, for another slow burning track, dropping right down, searching for signs of life before coming round and surging forward. Ben flying high, soaring into the atmosphere, fingers playing up and down the neck, a phenomenal storming finish to this show case on his Live performances.
I’ve already said, I feel the weak point is the vocal depth, now I’m going to be really contrary, it sort of grows on you, worming its way into your head, this is the most enjoyable album Ben Poole has released to date, he is far better suited to the Live arena, than the recording studio, for me.
Turn down the lights, grab a beer, and feed in that base, until it kicks you in the chest, for a personal gig.

Ben Poole releases new double live album on Friday

The Blues rock guitarist, singer-songwriter Ben Poole will release his new double live album "Ben Poole Trio Live '19" this coming Friday. The album was recorded over three nights in July last year at The Old Schoolhouse in Barnsley, The Half Moon in South London and Bootleggers in Kendal, Cumbria.
The double live album features Wayne Proctor on drums, Steve Amadeo on bass and Ben Poole on vocals and guitar. It showcases Ben’s most popular songs from his past two albums, including 2018’s critically acclaimed "Anytime You Need Me" and 2016’s "Time Has Come".
The album marks Ben’s first live release in five years. The last was 2014’s "Live at The Royal Albert Hall". This new album showcases some spontaneous, energetic and powerful performances of the standout tracks on his recent album "Anytime You Need Me".
Ben will also be supporting Eric Gales in Leeds and Glasgow following the release of Eric’s new album ‘The Bookends’.
