The Gravedigger hunched himself over the body. He reached out a hand, two hands, then the other two. Before he could grab hold of the body, someone shouted behind him.

“Hey monster! Stay away from him!”

He twisted his body around, stared at the young human with his empty eye sockets set deep in his long skull head. She stood defiant before him, shaking slightly, trying not to show it.

“Heh. Another fight, so soon. No learning from this, then. Oh well.”

Lynn looked behind him as he slowly, carefully, straightened into a stand. She saw Ben there, on the ground, unconscious but unharmed. And Ohk, that poor creature who had tried their best, they were farther back; she couldn’t see how they were, if they were breathing at all. Her stomach twisted as she realized what she was doing.

“Little human,” the Gravedigger said. “Try, try. Save this human, save that other critter—too late. Already taken care of. Heh.” He chuckled, rattling and deep, as he towered over Lynn. “Another body on the ground. Heh heh. Making lots of corpses today.” He took a shuddering step towards her, his laughter escalating, until it cut off with a sudden force.

One hoofed foot slid forward, the sound and the movement jittery. He tried to pick the other up, but it scraped along as well, and soon he was tipping over.

The ground shook when he collapsed.

Without anymore thought Lynn ran past him to Ben, who was breathing softly. “Ben! I swear if you don’t get up right now—”

“Is he gone?”

“What? No, he just fell here. But we gotta go before he can recover from... whatever it is that happened.”

Ben didn’t open his eyes; his face looked so exhausted. “I... I cut his stomach with Ohk’s seam ripper. I don’t know.”

Lynn quickly spun around and looked back at the Gravedigger’s motionless body, putrid liquid slowly pooling around him. She gagged at the sight of it and turned back to Ben, now speechless. So without another word she helped him up, and the two of them visited Ohk, who was curled up on the ground.
