Outside of his professional and charitable pursuits, Ben Pu enjoys reading science fiction. He lists William Gibson among his favorite authors.
Born in South Carolina in 1948, William Gibson is an American-Canadian science fiction writer best known for pioneering the “cyberpunk” subgenre. From an early age, Gibson wanted to be a science fiction writer, but he spent much of his youth traveling and focusing on other pursuits.
Eventually, he made his way to Canada, where he married his wife and attended the University of British Columbia. Gibson’s work as an undergrad and later a master’s student in literature encouraged him to pursue writing as a full-time career. He published his first novel, Neuromancer, in 1984, and went on to help launch the cyberpunk generation.
Over the course of his career, Gibson has written novels, essays, and screenplays. His most recent novel, The Peripheral, was released in 2014.
