You are actually the first person in a really long time to say that Tripp and Ben were really predatory towards Serena. Can you explain why?

oh yes, i LOVE ranting about this and how much i hate them.

the ick factor of her relationship with ben is probably more obvious than tripp, to me at least, but i have seen a lot of people defend ben, shockingly, so i’ll go into detail anyway. he DEFINITELY had a crush on a 15 year old girl, he seemingly met up with her outside of school frequently, and that moment they had at the inn where he brushes her hair out of her face...? 🤢 he ultimately rejects her advances, fine, and what lily did to him was wrong and it’s obviously understandable to be angry when you’re essentially framed for something you didn’t do, but to spend years plotting your revenge on this teenage girl, trying to literally ruin her life, without even stopping for a single minute to admit the fact that your relationship with her actually WAS inappropriate even if you didn’t physically act on it? it’s weird. and deeply tragic for serena in a way that i don’t even know how to articulate.

so that’s all bad enough, but what’s worse is the fact that he literally DID PURSUE A ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP WITH HER AS SOON AS HE COULD...? it felt very groomer-ish. he was an authority figure in her life when she was a minor and he made her feel special when she was a minor (when she’s like “it was nice to have someone pay attention to me for positive things and he was the only person to ever say no to me and i was in love with him because of that” ...i want to cry for so many reasons), which gives him a certain kind of influence over her that he very much abused. plus, “oh, so she didn’t accuse me of the thing i thought she did? guess i’ll give up my long-planned plot to ruin her life and make out with her instead like i always wished i could.” again, i just don’t even know how to properly articulate why this is so gross of him and sad for serena, but it is. what i hate the most is that he was just absolved of all of this and people were like “aw we misjudged him :)” and it was presented as if lily was the only villain in this situation.

for tripp, i feel like it’s the typical “older, powerful man cheating on his uptight wife with a 19 year old girl” thing except that tripp at least wasn’t that much older (though he did feel much older considering his career). that alone tends to be at least a little uncomfortable, since it to me always looks like a man using a younger woman because she’s hot, but he would never be with her in public (opting to, of course, stay with the Morally Upstanding good wife... madonna vs whore and all that) because after all, she’s only good for one particular thing. this man doesn’t really care about this woman, he doesn’t really love her like he says he does, he in fact could not care less about who she is as a person. what makes this so painfully clear for tripp and serena is when he literally leaves serena to die. he swore he loved her, but in the end he literally did not truly care if she lived or died and ran right back to maureen, and left the poor stupid mistress alone, injured in the middle of nowhere.
