A new chapter of @benafee’s remaking the world by naming it together AND two new @agentsnickers fics in one week? Magnificent
(This is benafee with regard to If We Were Villains) haha join us in our suffering :)
The whole book felt like falling off a cliff and then I got to the end and realized I wasn’t falling the whole time I was being held up by something and it had just been cut loose
Fanfic end of year asks: 1, 3, 15, and 24 (but you do not have to limit yourself to one if that is too hard)
1. favorite fic you wrote this year
in a week absolutely! it’s far from my most successful but it really felt like one i wrote for me and i reread it the most. i’m so proud of it
3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year
answered this already but i am also a sucker for the first kiss from in a week! i reread it sometimes when i’m stuck on writing something and.... goddamn is it good
15. something you learned this year
this sounds super corny but ... i learned that people actually want to read the stuff i write! i started writing this year out of sheer need for something to enjoy and i never expected any of what’s happened - the comments, the responses, the friendships, the regular readers, any of it! if anything maybe i’ve actually learned to have a little more faith in myself and what i love doing
24. favorite fic you read this year
how do i even begin with this one??
obviously anything and everything by the wonderful @penzyroamin especially tied together and also this night is sparkling has such a special place in my heart
the substitute by @landlessbud !! the period drama of my dreams they are such an incredible writer
keeping promises by @jewishdavidjacobs holy shit is that fic unbelievable
also @agentsnickers’ near miss makes me ache its so beautiful
and letters written with your heart in your throat by @thetruthabouttheboy !! the most beautiful premise of any fic ever
also a shout out to this one ralbert fic that i think is now deleted that i read that was told in email exchanges. i literally think about it daily and if anyone can tell me where to find it again i will owe u my life it was fantastic
that’s probably loads more than anyone asked for and i’ve still missed out so many but. these have been some real highlights this year
Book asks: 2, 6, 8, and 25 please.
2. Did you reread anything? What? Yes! I reread Robin McKinley’s Beauty for my guest spot on @droo216‘s podcast!
6. Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to? Fully intended to read Harrow the Ninth but couldn’t quite make it. Next year!
8. Did you meet any of your reading goals? Which ones? Yes! My goal was to read 50, and I read 71. Every year I also pick a genre I don’t usually read to try to read more of, and my goal this year was to read more sci-fi. According to my Book Riot reading log (here’s the link to the 2021 version), 18% of the books I read this year were sci-fi, which is much more than it would be if I hadn’t focused on it!
25. What reading goals do you have for next year? Again, 50 books (although I’d like to read more, like I did this year! But 2020 has taught me to never expect another “typical year”). I also picked nonfiction as my genre to read more of this coming year (only 1.4% of the books I read this year were nonfiction.) So if you have any nonfiction books you love, let me know!
Life advice: when you have a bad day read every story @benafee has posted. Either the amazing writing will cheer you up or the torture and pain she puts the characters through will help you put things in perspective
I’m downloading fics to read for my flight and @benafee’s story remaking the world by naming it together is 358 pages as a pdf. And you know what? It’s 358 pages of genius. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
Are there any tropes that don’t appeal to you? Not necessarily ones you are uncomfortable with but rather ones that you just don’t seek out or understand their popularity?
i tend to avoid lots of violence or fast-moving action-based fics because that is simply Not My Cup Of Tea. i’m a slow moving person and i love a good 50k slow burn florist au more than anyone out there. i tend to avoid sad fics too - even ones that just have it as a plot point and end up okay at the end. things like cheating, major breakups, major character death just don’t tend to appeal to me. maybe it’s because i can’t write them. major props to people who can that shits hard as fuck
You know I have to ask about the florist fic. What are you looking forward to? Care to share a snippet?
i am looking forward to ALL of it goddamn i am so excited and we are in Cahoots with a capital C about it. i’m looking forward to writing the Scene with the Bit about Twitter that was Mentioned in the Intro if you Know What I Mean ;) yes u may have a short snippet from this scene that is half-written:
‘Shit, Jack -’ Davey mumbles against Jack’s mouth, and then, louder, ‘ow, shit! Rose thorns!’
‘Shit, fuck, sorry -’ Jack uses his hand around Davey’s waist to pull him away from the large pile of roses he has inadvertently pressed him into.
