It takes a good few moments for the sound of blood rushing through Brandt’s ears to die down as his other senses kick back in.
The leather steering wheel feels clammy with his own sweat, his mouth tastes dry and a bit like the grapes he snacked on a few hours ago. The air reeks of heated pavement and burnt rubber.
There’s a heartbeat hammering away beneath his other hand. It’s too quick but it’s shamelessly and gloriously alive.
“Did you just- soccer mum Benji?” Jane pipes up from the backseat, laughter barely contained in her voice.
“No,” Brandt grinds out, pulling back his arm from where it’s splayed across Benji’s chest as the black cat in front of the car meows at them and sashays towards the sidewalk.
Benji is alternating between beaming at him and at Jane, who is rapidly typing away at her phone, no doubt liveblogging the latest shenanigans of their road trip to Ilsa.
“It’s okay,” Benji whispers and lays his hand on top of Brandt’s on the gear stick. “I trust your instincts more than I trust seatbealts, too.”
