Something Genuine Season 2, Ep. 7: Jennifer Sun Bell on Hapa Identity, Voice Acting, and Belonging

My next guest on Something Genuine Jennifer Sun Bell, the voice behind White Fox in Marvel Rivals, Tamaki in Suzume, Sirius in Re:ZERO, Caesar King in Zenless Zone Zero, and so many other roles. But besides being a fan of her work, this interview provided an unexpected joy in discover how much Jennifer and I had in common!

We realized we’re both half Korean, both grew up in military families, and were even born in the same hospital in the same city. That common ground led to one of my favorite conversations we’ve had on Something Genuine.

Jennifer also talks openly about growing up between two cultures, never feeling fully Korean or fully white, and how those experiences shaped both her life and her career. It’s an honest conversation about identity and belonging that really resonated with me.

We also dive into her work as a voice actor, from Marvel Rivals and Re:ZERO to Suzume, and discuss how she approaches complex characters—not by asking how to play a villain, but by asking why that character believes they’re right. It was a fascinating glimpse into her craft.

Finally, Jennifer shares some encouraging advice for anyone pursuing creative work: your path doesn’t have to be linear. Some of the most meaningful opportunities come from the unexpected turns along the way.

15 - Pray for wisdom and strength for Mecahawk, Lenlenkai, and Twwk, the BtT Discord admins, as they seek to develop community and model Christ to the members, and for our mods, Archy and Joli—may they carry out their role with wisdom, compassion, and character.

16 - Our small group meets on Sundays. Pray that our members draw nearer to God, that those who aren’t saved do meet Christ and accept him as Lord and Savior, and that our members all find good local Christian communities to join.

17 - Pray for our editor, Dr. Steve. May God grant him wisdom, and may he be diligent as he molds our articles into excellent pieces that communicate God’s love through the writers’ analyses but also by demonstrating excellence in our craft.

18 - Pray for the writers of Beneath the Tangles. May they write with a focused and prayerful heart, using their skills and guided by the Holy Spirit to develop articles that draw people to the site, to godly community, and ultimately, to God.

Here are our prayer items for the rest of the month:

27 - Pray for clarity and guidance for our staff as we share Christ.

28 - Pray that the Anime Ministry Network—a collaboration of digital missionaries reaching otaku—will find loving, effective, and engaging ways to work with one another to share Christ with anime fans.

29 - Many Christians find our site as they seek resources about anime. Pray that we’ll be able to support and encourage them to seek God more fully on their Christian walks.

30 - We want to envision big things, including a ministry that shakes down walls for Christ across the vast space of the anime fandom. Pray that fans will think of Jesus when they think of anime, and may BtT be used by God to make miraculous things happen in this sphere.

31 - Pray for our Discord server—may it be a community tied together by the love and truth of Christ, and where Christians may flourish in their faith, non-Christians may feel welcome and served, God is glorified, and friendships are meaningful.

Here are our first prayer requests for this week:

29 - Pray for our Discord server—may it be a community tied together by the love and truth of Christ, where Christians may flourish in their faith, non-Christians may feel welcome and served, and God is glorified, and friendships are meaningful.

30 - Pray for a favorite person in the anime industry. Pray for their good, especially that they may know God if they don’t and grow closer to Him if they do. You may be the only person praying for them.

1 - Our summer 2026 anime first impression posts have begun! Please pray that many will find our site through these posts, opening doors for us to love and minister to them.

2 - Our Anime Expo coverage is starting! Pray for safety, open doors, and divine appointments as T.R., Ryan (nyanroh32), and Joseph cover the convention for us.

3 - Pray for “Above Anime,” our twice-monthly newsletter. May the devotionals encourage readers in their faith, the newsletter help readers discover our pieces, and Hayley, Samuru, Nathan, M.H., and Myne to have wisdom as they write it.

4 - Pray that God will provide wisdom, strength, and grace to Mecahawk and Twwk as they oversee and lead the various Beneath the Tangles departments.

5 - Our small group meets on Sundays. Pray that it will be a time of learning, prayer, fellowship, and accountability for the attendees and leaders.
