SWAN SONG (An Apple TV+ Movie)

Synopsis: In the near future, a terminally ill man (Mahershala Ali) explores a heart wrenching, emotionally complex solution to save his wife (Naomie Harris) and son from grief without them knowing. (Director: by Benjamin Cleary)

This movie broke me 😩. Judging by the reviews, it’s a hit for some and a miss for others, but dammit it hit ME. While every shot is breathtakingly beautiful and spacious, the tale itself is a slow burn with a somber premise on life and death. 

It’s a drama with a sci-fi edge, filled with sleek technology and smooth, eye-catching cars but doesn’t feel forced in an over-the-top, futuristic kind of way because it still maintains a sense of normalcy that we can relate to in our present world. If technology was actually that advanced today, I could picture us living in a Swan Song kind of world.

As for the meaning of the movie’s title itself:

The term “swan song” is based in the ancient myth that swans, whose honks are not very melodic, sing one beautiful song just before death. It is used to refer to an artist's or athlete's final appearance, something special and meaningful. (x)

進行癌で余命少ない主人公が残された妻子を悲しませないために、自らのクローンを作成して入れ替わってもらう実験に参加する🧪

なかなか重いテーマですが、死が確定したときに人がどうなるかをとても丁寧に描いており、死にゆく人の視点に寄り添うような内容の良作SF映画です‼️

近未来の描写が非常に面白いです‼️

コンタクトを利用したVR技術や各種ウェラブルデバイス、ロボット販売員、自動運転など、現実に開発されつつあるものがとても自然に描かれており、それらがどう活用されているかもさりげなく物語にリンクさせながら理解させていくスタイルはとても映画的で良いです👌

倫理的な問題を孕んでますし、かなり突飛なストーリーなので、下手な人が演じるとダメ映画になりそうですが、役者陣の演技がしっかりしてるのでとても味わい深いドラマに仕上がってます‼️

主人公役のマハーシャラ・アリはもちろんのこと、同じく死にゆく人を演じるオークワフィナが良い味出してる👍

何癌かは語られないですが（症状から多分脳には病変あり）、主人公は進行癌でいつ死ぬかもしれない状態です😔

僕も癌診療に関わる立場ですが、若い年代の人が癌になった時にどのように感じるのか、死ぬまでにどう過ごすのが良いのかなど、この映画で改めて考えさせられました💦

というか、観終わったあと、自分がもうすぐ死ぬとしたら妻や子供にどうするだろうかと考えてしまいました😫

終盤の子供との会話シーンなどは、胸にグサグサ刺さるので観てて結構辛かったです💦

新年を迎えるというのに年内最後の映画がヘビーでしんみりした気分ですよ😓

中盤に辛い展開が待ち受けているのですが、あれに似たことはしばしば経験します。終末期医療あるあるかもしれません💦

「今ならいけると思ったけどダメかぁ」と患者さんも医療者側も無念に思うことが微妙なタイミングの差で起こるのが終末期医療😞それがうまく表現されてました💦

細かいことですが

何とこの映画、まるで日本の居酒屋みたいにビールのおつまみに枝豆が合うことを強調するシーンがあります‼️

“Edamame with loads of salt.”

って言って枝豆を嬉しそうに食べるんですが、外国の映画でビールと枝豆を食べるシーンは初めて観ました😅
