Did it matter that Race had been eyeing Spot for a whole third of his life? Yeah, probably. Did that mean he was going easy on her? Yeah.

Not because she was a girl, though. People like Spot and Boxer and Charlie always reminded Race to the core of him that not all girls needed to be treated gently, just like those five minutes with Darcy had shown him not all guys were sharp assholes who wanted to throw down. Race was a dick, but he didn’t have the same sweeping sexist connotations that he had grown up with, not anymore.

Even still. Seeing a bruise on Spot’s face didn’t feel satisfying. If he was gonna see her every day, like he tried to on his long journeys to Sheepshead, even just for two seconds, he wanted to see her safe.

But. Hey. She’d asked.

Race’s grin spread, twisting into a bit of a smirk. “Ya can take it, right, Conlon?” he jeered, made a fake as if he was going to throw a punch at her ribs, then sent his hand flying toward her nose instead. If it pissed her off, she could give him something to match.
