I think we as a nation [Olympics obsessed community] have moved past the need for NBC to constantly fixate on an athlete and label them as "undefeatable." When will they learn that when they center their entire programming on ONE athlete, you put immense mental pressure on them when everything they do all boils down to their MENTAL GAME. NBC should actually not be allowed to try and market athletes as gold medalist before or during the games. I said what I said. NBC and other broadcasters globally should only be allowed to tell casuals about the athletes - story, background, history, nothing more. No IFs.
Very funny to me that the last skating phenom who hit the US scene was Nathan Chen who was allergic to competing in anything but long sleeve simple black on black and now we have Ilia Malinin who hits the ice in what's best described as "vampire with a shopping problem"
okay I know it’s very popular to hate on ilia malinin, and I do personally think yuma is a better skater and id like to see him take the gold after his fantastic silver last time around. HOWEVER it cannot be understated that his artistry is MILES beyond Nathan chen’s. he has great edges, great spins, he has fun, and when he remembers to he can have great expression
I’m just so glad that the poster child for big jumps can also deliver on the art and presentation. Nathan got closer towards the end for me, especially in lacrimosa, but I do think ilia’s pulling his weight, beyond just being a jumping machine. And he’s so new! I’m excited to see him get even better artistically, because truly sometimes it just takes a few years to settle into a style
Nathan was there in person to relive his 2018 Olympic short program in Ilia's free btw
NATHAN CHEN -> ALYSA LIU Winning 2x Olympic Gold as the reigning Grand Prix Final and World Champions
Grand Prix Final Champions Turin 2019 -> Nagoya 2025 World Champions Stokcholm 2021 -> Boston 2025 Olympic Gold Medalists in Team Event Beijing 2022 -> Milan 2026 Olympic Gold Medalists Beijing 2022 -> Milan 2026
✨️ The best man to explain what happened yesterday. Nathan Chen the former US Olympic gold medal explained he experienced a similar scenario during the 2018 Winter olympic games. It wasn't just his first olympics but his first ones with a lot of pressure ending 17th in the short program and overall 5th after the free skate. Guess what ? He came back in 2022 to win the gold medal in men's figure skating.
Champions always learn ✨️. It'll be fine.
One more little nonsense for now
