Piper is an AI that looks, acts, and feels all completely human. She was even examined by doctors and had blood drawn and her artificial body could not be detected. She does not know what she is or that she has powers. She is aware of something different but doesn't remember where she came from,
Benny is an AI just like Piper but he had a fatal exception error that destroyed his programming. Essentially he stopped doing the commands of his creators without even knowing, fully, what he was or what he is capable of as he was programmed not to ask questions. Although curious and easily intrigued by nature Benny has a career as a journalist.
He hadn't met the other before so he guessed he should start with an introduction. A greeting. Something. He didn't go that route. He huffed instead and called out. "You don't even know what you have, do you?" He asked. That wasn't weird at all Benny. Get it together.

His younger years don't hold much of note. He was a human, had a normal upbringing, went to school, and had friends. He was like anyone else. It was as an adult that his life took a bizarre change.
He had been working as an investigative journalist at Fell Media Group when he was in an unfortunate accident that would ultimately take his life. But this was not where his story ended. It was a new beginning of sorts.
After a car accident, he was taken to a new advanced medical facility operated by Augur Industries, a leading tech giant. Augur was working on a new technology: synthetic beings. And these AIs were to use real human likeness as the base. Some were based on photos of creators as children, others were based on the dead. The dead made the best subjects. Release them back to their normal lives to let these new synthetics interrogate in human society with no one being any the wiser. Part of the synthetic program was to collect data. Anything and everything.
Benny was one of these unwilling subjects. When his human body passed on his appearance was used to model a synthetic to take his place. Someone with no family ties working as a journalist was a perfect pioneer.
Deep down somewhere, Benny knew what he was but was also programmed to not ask questions about it. He didn't know who created him or why. He didn't know the grander scale of the project or where he originally came from. He kept his identity as an AI a secret, as he was also programmed to do. As far as he or anyone else was concerned he was still human.
These synthetic beings are lab made organic tissues made to simulate a human combined with an artificial intelligence at the helm. Other small mechanics and ports can be found hidden throughout the body to help keep it functioning and keep the AI in sync with the artificial tissues. Synthetics can age, eat, breathe, ect just the same as humans. An amazing advance of technology. Being examined by a doctor, having basic lab tests and other diagnostics would not reveal anything different or suspicious. But serious injury or any surgery would lead to the unexpected.
Years later, still working for Phell Media, Benny wrote a small piece on Auger Industries and was given funding to continue investigating. But he hit a roadblock. No one would go on record and many wouldn't talk at all. However, he did uncover something. He learned that Augur Industries had started investing in expensive medical research with human test subjects. Head of it all? A man named Richard Kindred.
When he found out that a plane possibly belonging to Kindred had crashed on a beach he went to the site in hopes of finding something worthwhile for his investigative piece.
