Creating Our Genius Artwork

Eleanor and Katherine partner to create the Genius issue image. Eleanor on their bi-city process:

I'm in Athens, Georgia and Katherine is in Riverside, California. We've been collaborating on comics and art together since high school. We started doing painted works together in 2010; Katherine does the backgrounds and landscapes and I do the figures populating them. When we do illustration work together we both work on sketches and thumbnails and brainstorm together, then Kate starts a piece, I populate it, and we work together to combine the two things digitally. It's an exciting process that always has lots of surprises and usually creates something neither of us is suspecting. It's fun!

I don't think you guys realize how hard it was for me to pick a favorite illustrator, but Eleanor Davis is definitely in my top 10. Her line work is gorgeous, her color is rich, and her voice is poignant and smart. She does regular illustrations for The New Yorker, NYT, Lucky Peach, and more as well as recently publishing a book of her works called How to Be Happy.
