July Is Pluto’s Month to Shine
July truly is Pluto's month: With a good-ish telescope and the right weather conditions, star-gazers in America can look south to the constellation Sagittarius—there, they will see what NASA describes as a small teaspoon-shaped star cluster that also contains Pluto. Visible all month, it is perfect timing for the New Horizons mission, which has been cleared to do a flyby of Pluto on July 14. If you can't get a telescope, then stick to binoculars and keep your eyes on Sagittarius: M22, a star cluster that looks as big as the moon from our perspective, is visible to the left of it.

This Single-Cell Organism Has A “Human” Eye
A kind of marine plankton, called warnowiids, have evolved an "eye" that is very similar to a mammalian eye, according to a new study. Called an ocelloid and made up of sub-cellular organelles arranged like a human eye, it could help the plankton spot prey by enabling it to detect the changes in light as it passes through them using a similar light filter to a polarized lens, say researchers. Interestingly, researchers first thought the eye must’ve been part of something the plankton ate, not part of the plankton itself.

A Memory-Crunching Computer That Works Like a Brain
Scientists created a “memcomputer,” a computer that crunches numbers and stores results at the same time as it solves a problem, rather than separately. It's made of six memprocessors, which can change their resistance and store information as they process it—to prove the concept, researchers had it solve the subset sum problem: if you have a group of numbers, can you have a subset of one number or more that adds up to zero? Researchers say it may be the first step in creating smart computers capable of communicating more naturally with humans, as our brain works in a similar, non-linear way.

Consciousness Began When the Gods Stopped Speaking
Psychologist Julian Jaynes hypothesized that consciousness emerged from a "bicameral mind" that was half human, half gods: "Jaynes [unfurled] a version of history in which humans were not fully conscious until about 3,000 years ago, instead relying on a two-part, or bicameral, mind, with one half speaking to the other in the voice of the gods with guidance whenever a difficult situation presented itself. The bicameral mind eventually collapsed as human societies became more complex, and our forebears awoke with modern self-awareness, complete with an internal narrative, which Jaynes believes has its roots in language."
