Just thinking about how Bernie quit Holby after they shut down the Trauma Unit and went to work in Sudan and at the hospital in Nairobi - she went where her trauma skills would be most useful.
Then when Serena tells her, at Jason's wedding, that she didn't fall in love with a suburban Bernie Wolfe and made remarks about Bernie not putting out the bins in her slippers, I think that to Bernie it sounded like Serena felt Bernie won't be useful in suburbia, so because Bernie lacks confidence in herself in domestic situations (hence her repeated remarks about being a bad mother), she accepts Serena's assessment of her unsuitability for a domestic suburban life, and she walks away instead.
